RECRUITING

A Welcome from Head Coach Chris Myhre

Thank you for your interest in the University of Puget Sound and our swimming program. We are always searching for quality student-athletes who will continue what is a strong tradition of academic and aquatic success at Puget Sound.

We are currently members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III and the Northwest Conference (NWC). Please complete the questionnaire found on this site, and return it to me. Upon receipt of your questionnaire, I will send you more information about our team and its programs. I also suggest that you plan to visit our campus. I would be glad to help you arrange a visit, in coordination with the Office of Admission.

Financial aid in the form of academic and need based grants, guaranteed student loans, college work-study and a host of other resources is available to qualified students. You will need to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by February 1, 2006, for priority consideration. You may obtain this form from your high school counselor or from our financial aid office by calling 253-879-3214 or 800-396-7192.

Being at Puget Sound has been a terrific experience for me as a coach and staff person. People are willing to help you and go a bit further than what is simply asked of them. The red carpet gets rolled out to get you here, but it stays down the entire time you are here and even beyond. I hope you will look further into what, more likely than not, is the place for you to continue your education and swim faster than ever. Best of luck to you and do not hesitate to write or call if you have further questions.

About Puget Sound Swimmming

Women's Varsity Swimming begins its 30th year, with the men starting their 49th campaign in 2005-2006.

UPS swimmers have held numerous NCAA and NAIA national records, with an even greater number of event champions. The Loggers as a team have finished as high as 2nd at the NCAA Division II level, winning NAIA titles for the women in 1989, 1990, 1996, 1998, and 1999, and for the men, championships in 1995, 1996, and 1997. After a number of years at the NAIA level, UPS now competes at the NCAA Division III level. Our women have placed as high as 9th, the men 15th at the D-III Championships.

The University of Puget Sound has a winning tradition and a philosophy which includes team participation at the National Championships each year.

To Prospective Puget Sound Swimmers

The purpose of this communication is to provide information about Varsity Team membership for the upcoming academic year. This is information about collegiate swimming that we feel High School/USS swimmers need to be aware of.

1. A maximum of 18 swimmers constitutes a UPS travel team.

2. A maximum of 18 swimmers is allowed entry into "post-season" Championship competition, regardless how many qualify. This includes conference and nationals.

3. Our teams generally have about 20-30 people on each team.

It is important to keep in mind that in college swimming, the 200 distance in fly, back, and breast is very important. Often, the only opportunity to swim 100's in those strokes is on a Medley Relay, or in a "Championship" meet format. On the next page you will find a sheet listing the typical order of events.

Having already met one of the performance standards from the list below would most likely put you in a position to contribute to the team in dual meets and invitationals. If you do not make these times as yet, there is still room for you on our team. For most of you, you have only begun to scratch the surface as for your abilities in the water.

Times listed are 25-yard course

400 IM 5:05.50 4:40.00

Again, we realize that there may be some swimmers that have not reached these times, but show great potential. In looking over this list of times and those times that our swimmers are doing, consider your own potential as you and your coach see it, your commitment to the sport, and your possible contribution to the Logger Swimming Team. Over the years, we have had a good number of "diamonds in the rough" that have shown great improvement in college.
