Range Maps of Western Dragonflies

Updated February 2007

County records that are sight records only are in green. Some of them, especially from Southern Idaho, are of individuals caught, identified in the hand, and released.

Revision dates for maps are in the upper left corner of each map.

These maps show county records for all Odonata species recorded from the contiguous western United States. They are produced by David Nunnallee from records compiled by Dennis Paulson.

These records come from the published literature, specimens examined in numerous museum and private collections, the files of various state surveys, and lots of unpublished information sent by many contributors. Thanks to the increasing interest in Odonata all over the West, the list of people who have contributed county records is now too long to justify its publication, but special thanks to Kathy Biggs for her efforts in gathering up these records! The maps will be revised regularly as new information becomes available. Please inform Dennis Paulson of any discrepancies you observe.

Sight records are not as valuable as specimen records, as they can never be verified or modified with new information. Thus, specimen records should still be sought from all counties in green.

Click on the species that interests you. The maps are grouped 2 to a page.

Note that San Juan and Island counties in western Washington are sufficiently small that shading does not show up well in them. In Wyoming, "YNP" indicates a record for Yellowstone National Park not assigned to a county.
