National Honor Society Recognizes Puget Sound as Outstanding Chapter

Columbus, OH - The Golden Torch Award was presented to the University of Puget Sound recognizing it as an outstanding Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society chapter at the national conference held July 22-24, 2005 in Columbus, Ohio.
Founded in the spring of 1922 as the Otlah Chapter, Puget Sound's chapter of Mortar Board, was originally a faculty-nominated, women's honorary organization committed to academic excellence and college service. The program was accepted into the Mortar Board National Senior Women's Honorary in 1959.
Mortar Board members are selected in the spring of each year by their peers in recognition of their leadership, scholarship and service. Students are eligible for membership in their junior year and must be ranked in the upper 35% scholastically of their class.
Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. Since its founding in 1918, the organization has grown from the four founding chapters to 213 chapters and 240,000 initiated members across the nation. Members of each Mortar Board chapter spend their senior year working together to give back to their communities, the nation and the world through the areas of scholarship, leadership and service. Furthermore, Mortar Board provides opportunities for continued leadership development, promotes service to colleges and universities and encourages lifelong contributions to the global community.
18 universities including University of Puget Sound were selected to receive the recognition for the 2004-2005 school year based on a series of criteria including exemplifying the ideals of scholarship, leadership, and service.
