PROSPECTIVE ATHLETES
Dear Prospective Athlete-
The University of Puget Sound and the Cross Country coaching staff are pleased that you have expressed an interest in Puget Sound and our program. We hope that your interest grows throughout the coming year and that you take the opportunity to visit our campus and meet the coaches, student-athletes, and faculty. We have much to offer you as a student-athlete, both academically and athletically.
We are members of the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division III and the Northwest Conference. At the Division III level, men's races are eight kilometers in length while women race six kilometers.
The University of Puget Sound has enjoyed a great deal of success in cross country on both the regional and national level. Throughout the past ten years, Puget Sound has produced 34 All-Americans and 30 Academic All-Americans in cross country alone. On the men's side, Dave Davis ran a 23:42 to win the 1999 National Championship, a time that today still stands as the fastest time in NCAA Division III National Championship history, while Dan McLean took home fourth place from the 2002 National Championship. As a team, the Logger men have advanced to the National Championships twice in the past three years, and have placed in the top three in the NCAA's Western Region since joining the NCAA in 1999. Before joining the NCAA, the Loggers were in the NAIA and the women's cross country team had a run of four straight national championships (1992-95). In 2001, Dana Boyle won the NCAA National Championship crown. Together, our teams have won eight Northwest Conference titles and been team Academic All-Americans for the last five years.
The cross country program welcomes all student-athletes who have a desire to learn and improve, and who are willing to take collegiate athletics and academics seriously. Our coaches work in conjunction with our runners to ensure a balanced and excellent liberal arts education and athletic experience. Beginning in late August, our distance runners enjoy many beautiful parks and trails in Tacoma for training.
Financial aid in the form of academic and need-based grants, student loans, college work-study and a host of other resources is available to qualified students. You will need to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by February 1 for priority consideration. You may obtain this form from your high school counselor or from our financial aid office by calling (253)879-3214 or (800)396-7192.
If you are interested in becoming a student-athlete at the University of Puget Sound, please complete and submit the online cross country questionnaire. If we can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us at any time at (253)879-3453. Thanks again for your interest in cross country at Puget Sound, and we look forward to working with you as a Logger.
