International Students

Admission to the University involves meeting both academic requirements and visa requirements.  The following information details application instructions for undergraduate applicants--graduate students will find the additional requirements in the graduate section. You can also find more information at the Office of International Programs.

International Application Checklist

  • Apply online or submit either the Application for Freshmen Admission or the Application for Transfer Admission and return it by the priority deadline with a non-refundable $40 (U.S. funds) application fee to the University of Puget Sound, Office of Admission, 1500 North Warner Street #1062, Tacoma, WA, 98416-1062.
  • Submit the Supplemental Application for International Students.
  • Transcripts: Arrange to have official transcripts of all work completed on the high school and/or college level forwarded directly from the institution(s) attended to the Puget Sound Office of Admission. Students sitting for school certificates should request the Examination Board of Council to forward results directly to the University. We are unable to take action on copies of transcripts or certificates issued to the applicant.  Transcripts must be in English.
  • Standardized Tests:  Freshman applicants must submit the scores from the Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT I) or the American College Test (ACT).
  • English Proficiency (for visa requirements): The University of Puget Sound does not offer a program in English as a Second Language. English proficiency must be established by submitting the official scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Undergraduate applicants are expected to obtain a score of 550 or higher on the paper exam or a 213 or higher on the computer exam or 80 on the TOEFL ibt exam for admission to the University.
  • International Student Financial Statement (for visa requirements): Financial assistance for the student on an F-l Visa (student visa) is not available. To satisfy visa application requirements, the applicant must show adequate finances to cover the expected period of study by submitting an International Student Financial Statement bearing the necessary signature and letters of financial guarantee. The financial guarantee must state that the applicant has in excess of $42,000 (U.S. funds) available for the academic year.

Registration materials for all of the examinations discussed above are available from American Embassies and Consulate offices, the United States Information Agency (USIA), and many private organizations like the Institute of International Education (IIE), African-American Institute (AAI), America-Mid East Educational and Training Services (AMIDEAST), and the American Kor-Asian Foundation. Registration materials for the TOEFL examination are also available by writing TOEFL, Box 899, Princeton, NJ, 08540, U.S.A.
