WelcomeWelcome to the Department of Philosophy at the University of Puget Sound. Although just how best to define philosophy is itself something of a philosophical problem, certain subjects and certain attitudes towards them are of perennial philosophical interest. Those subjects include the nature and limits of both reality and our knowledge of that reality, as well as approaches to good conduct and achieving happiness, given that reality. Those attitudes are primarily critical and reflective, seeking justifications for, and coherence among, our beliefs about what we know, how we know it and how we should live. At the University of Puget Sound, students are encouraged to develop their own critical and reflective skills, their own philosophical talents, by rigorously engaging classic and contemporary texts, their professors and each other. |
