Faculty MentoringThe School of Music recognizes the challenges a new faculty member may face in the transition and acclimation to a new institution. It therefore offers new faculty the opportunity as well as encouragement to work with a mentor. Upon request, and with the consent of both the mentor and the new faculty member, the Director will assign a mentor to the new faculty member. The new faculty member and the mentor will determine the duration of the mentoring assignment. If this mentor is requested to be outside the School of Music, the Director will seek approval from the head officer of the other academic program.
Although the exact nature of the mentoring relationship is not dictated here, its intent is to be supportive instead of evaluative. It may include feedback regarding teaching effectiveness, information on institutional culture, discussion of pedagogical issues, attending classes of established faculty, and suggestions on matters of professional growth. Whatever its design, mentoring should speak to the unique needs of the new faculty member. |
