Stafford Loan Repayment Stafford Exit Loan Counseling Session
If you borrowed a Federal Stafford Loan, you are required to go through an exit loan counseling session before you graduate (or if you drop below half-time attendance). This loan session will discuss loan repayment schedules, loan consolidation options, deferment processes, and grace periods.
What if I’ve forgotten what type of loan I have or who my loan holder is? This information should be on your promissory note or on the bill you receive from your loan holder. But, it you have questions about what loans you have, you can review your federal student loan history through the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS). You can also obtain information about your NSLDS record by contacting the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 800.433.3243.
To access your records, you’ll need a PIN (Personal Identification Number). With your PIN, you can review the type and amount of the loans you borrowed, the status of each loan, and the name, address and telephone number of the loan holder.
If you submitted the FAFSA online, you can use the PIN you were assigned at that time. If you didn’t apply online or have lost you PIN, you can get one from the Department of Education Web site.
When do I begin repaying my loan?
You will begin repayment six months after you graduate, withdraw, or drop to less than half-time status. Your first payment will be due approximately 30 to 45 days after this six month "grace period".
How do I get a repayment schedule?
Your lender will send you a repayment and disclosure statement listing your monthly payment, payment due dates, length of repayment, and current interest rate. Lenders will usually send your repayment information the 4th or 5th month into your grace period. |
