Solo piano performance and teaching are the focus of musical life for Professor Duane Hulbert.  He maintains an active schedule of performances across the US and in the Puget Sound area.  Hulbert's CD recording of the piano works by the late-romantic Russian composer Alexander Glazunov was nominated for Grammy award in 2002.  However, his primary focus is the area of teaching.  "Watching my students grow as musicians is very rewarding to me, regardless of whether I'm teaching a group of class piano students or preparing an advanced student for a solo recital," says Professor Hulbert.  Many of his students have gone on to important music careers, including some that have won international competitions and hold prestigious faculty positions in music across the country.  As a member of the Puget Sound faculty since 1986, Professor Hulbert teaches studio piano, class piano, piano literature and pedagogy, music theory and chamber music.  He earned his BM and MMus from the Juilliard School of Music and his PhD from the Manhattan School of Music.  He was the first prizewinner of the 1980 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition, has won awards in the 1981 Leeds Competition in England and the 1985 Carnegie Hall International American Music Competition.  He has appeared as a recitalist at the Merkin Hall in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and at Benaroya Hall in Seattle.  His solo concerto performances have been with the Minnesota Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Tacoma Symphony, Northwest Sinfonietta, and the Seattle Symphony.
