CHECKING THE MAIL FOR THE INVITE
The first of two expected trips to Sacramento for the Logger women and the season finale for the Logger men came last weekend at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship on Lake Natoma. The site will also play host to the 2008 NCAA Championships near the end of May.
The Loggers On Saturday
The Puget Sound Logger women's Novice Eight boat narrowly defeated UC Irvine in the Petite Final to highlight the Logger performances on Saturday at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships on Lake Natoma near Sacramento, Calif.
The Novice Eight boat took third in their initial heat in the morning to take the top seed into the afternoon's petite final and the Loggers took advantage, defeating Division I UC Irvine by 1.3 seconds. The Loggers also took first in the Women's Pair petite final by default after Willamette and UC San Diego opted not to race.
The Loggers on Sunday
Competiting against some of the top crews on the West Coast, the Puget Sound Loggers took first in the Petite Final of the Women's Varsity Eight-D1/Open on Sunday morning at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships on Lake Natoma near Sacramento, Calif.
The Loggers, who chose to compete against Division I teams, covered the course in 7:06.3 to defeat St. Mary's by over nine seconds. Their time would have down the D2/D3/D1 Club Grand Final by six seconds.
In other action on Saturday, the Loggers took second in the Men's Novice Four final, trailing only University of San Diego. In the Women's Second Novice Eight Final, the Loggers finished third with a time of 7:48.7. The Men's Varsity Four took fourth in the finals, finishing just two-tenths of a second behind third-place Western Washington.
In the National Rankings
The Logger women jumped up to fourth in the USRowing Division III National Rankings, sharing that spot with Ithaca College. Trinity received all eight first place votes.
In the cMax Rankings, the Loggers have the top ranked vote in all of Division III, 0.9 seconds ahead of Williams and 1.2 seconds ahead of Trinity. In all divisions combined, the Loggers are ranked 33rd in the nation.
The Loggers at the NCAA Championships
The Loggers best finish at the national championships came in their first experience as they finished second at the 2003 championships. The 2008 NCAA Championship participants will be notified of their invitation on Tuesday, May 13.

The Coach
Sarah Canfield begins her third season as the Crew Program Director and Head Women's Coach at University of Puget Sound. She came to Washington after three years in Massachusetts, acting as the Novice coach for Boston College in 2004-2005 and Smith College from 2002-2004. While at Smith, she was also the Interim Head Coach for the fall season 2003.
The U.S. Rowing Level III certified coach has spent recent summers coaching community rowing programs, working with adult and junior rowers. She was the Head Coach of the Kenai Crewsers Rowing Club in Alaska for two seasons and has spent the past two summers coaching with Boulder Community Rowing in Colorado. She enjoys being able to combine coaching with her love of the outdoors, spending her free time mountain biking, camping or hiking with her dog Chloe.
Canfield graduated from the University of Kansas receiving her Masters in Social Welfare in 2002. She rowed for two years with the KU Club team and four years with the Jayhawk's Varsity Women's Rowing program. She was a four-time recipient of the Jayhawk Scholar award and member of the Commissioner's Honor Roll for the Big XII conference. She received the team's Senior Academic Award in 2002.
