LOGGERS ROW WITH BEST IN WEST
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Puget Sound Logger women's Novice Eight boat narrowly defeated UC Irvine in the Petite Final to highlight the Logger performances on Saturday at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships on Lake Natoma near Sacramento, Calif.
The Novice Eight boat took third in their initial heat in the morning to take the top seed into the afternoon's petite final and the Loggers took advantage, defeating Division I UC Irvine by 1.3 seconds. The Loggers also took first in the Women's Pair petite final by default after Willamette and UC San Diego opted not to race.
Most of the other races on Saturday helped to seed final races on Sunday. The Loggers Second Novice Eight is seeded fourth in the Grand Final, set to row at 9:00 a.m. The men's Varsity Four, which took ninth at last year's Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships, will row at 9:50 a.m. The women's Second Varsity Eight is seeded first in the Petite Final while both the Men's Varsity Eight and the Women's Varsity Eight will also compete in the petite finals.
The Logger women are ranked sixth nationally in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/US Rowing Division III poll. The Women's Varsity Eight boat is also ranked third nationally in Division III in the cMax rankings and 46th in the combined rankings, above several Division I schools.
