THE FINAL WHISTLE
The Loggers wrapped up the 2008 season last weekend with a last-minute loss to Redlands but the season was the best in school history, finishing 10-3 overall.
The Loggers v. Redlands
Redlands' Lisa O'Kane scored the winning goal with just 1:23 remaining as the Redlands Bulldogs slipped past the Puget Sound Loggers, 10-9, in a NCAA Division III women's lacrosse match on Saturday afternoon at Peyton Field in Tacoma, Wash.
The Bulldogs, ranked third in the NCAA West Region rankings, and the Loggers (10-3) traded the first four goals of the match and continued to see-saw back and forth. Lindsay O'Brien (Reading, Vt./Westminster) scored with 1:33 remaining in the first half to tie the game a 6-6 heading into halftime.
In the second period, Logger freshman Sofia Lama (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Torrey Pines) opened up the scoring in the second half but the Bulldogs answered back with three goals to take a 9-7 advantage. O'Brien scored again with 17:19 remaining and then Katie Pavlat (Eugene, Ore./Sheldon) evened the score at 9-9 with a goal at the 17:01 mark. Neither team found the net for the next 15:38 until O'Kane sneaked a shot past Logger keeper Ana Calciano (Farmington, Conn./Miss Porter's School) to give Redlands the 10-9 win.
Lama led the Loggers with three goals and one assist, adding nine ground balls and five draw controls. Calciano made 15 saves for Puget Sound, including 11 in the second half.
Redlands picked up two goals each from Christy Smith, Haley Kern and Rosie Breen. Lindsay Feig made 14 saves to collect the win.
Statistically Speaking
After the most successful season in school history, the Loggers finished the regular season ranked fifth nationally in scoring offence (17.13 gpg) and 31st in scoring margin (+4.62). Individually, Sofia Lama finished her freshman season ranked fifth in goals per game (4.67), ninth in points per game (5.92), 20th in draw controls (4.0) and 33rd in ground balls (3.75). Ana Calciano is ranked 25th in saves per game (12.0). Regionally Ranked For the first time in school history, the Puget Sound Loggers find themselves in the official NCAA
The Coach
A native of the Northwest, Liana Freeman enters her second season leading the Logger lacrosse program. Through two years, she has a career record of 15-11-0. Freeman graduated from University of Redlands in 2005 following a successful playing career and assisted former coach Beth Bricker in 2006.
While at Redlands, Freeman played both attack and defense. She holds a BA in Education from Redlands and a Masters in Education from Puget Sound and while not leading the Loggers, Freeman teaches 3rd grade at a local elementary school.
