LOGGERS DROP FINAL TWO OF 2008
PARKLAND, Wash. - Playing their final two games of 2008, the Puget Sound Loggers fell twice to the Pacific Lutheran Lutes in a Northwest Conference softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at PLU Field in Parkland.
In the first game, the Lutes exploded for five runs in the bottom of the first to immediately put the Loggers behind. Freshman Carolyn Moore (Seattle, Wash./Holy Names Academy) scored on a wild pitch in the top of the second to get the Loggers on the scoreboard. In the fourth, junior Kelli Ishii (Aiea, Hawaii/Punahou) drew a bases-loaded walk that scored Moore to bring the Loggers within three but PLU added one more insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to take the 6-2 win. Andi Doerflinger (Juneau, Alaska/Juneau-Douglas) took the loss, allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits in two innings pitched. Hadley Schmitt earned the win for PLU, allowing just two runs on eight hits in a seven-inning complete game.
In the second game, the Loggers broke open a scoreless game in the fourth when Victoria Raeburn (Portland, Ore./Gladstone) hit a rope down the right field line that scored Meghan Watson (Brier, Wash./Mountlake Terrace). The Lutes evened it up in the bottom of the inning and the two teams entered the seventh inning tied at 1-1.
In the top of the seventh, senior Noelle Vallecorsa (Federal Way, Wash.) used a single by Watson to motor around from second base and with a wrap-around slide, get her fingertips on the plate to avoid the tag by PLU's Vanessa Bryant. The Lutes again tied the game up in the bottom of the seventh, forcing an extra frame. After the Loggers went one-two-three in the top of the inning, sophomore Carly Starke led off the bottom of the inning with a game-winning home run to left field to give the Lutes the 3-2 win.
Auriel Sperberg (Tacoma, Wash./Graham-Kapowsin) took the loss, allowing three runs on eight hits in seven innings pitched. Rachel Wheeler-Hoyt collected the win, allowing two runs on six hits with four strike outs in eight innings pitched.
