SENIOR DAY SPOILED BY LUTES
TACOMA, Wash. - On a day honoring the three Puget Sound softball seniors, the Pacific Lutheran Lutes played spoiler, sweeping a Northwest Conference doubleheader from the Puget Sound Loggers, 3-2 and 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at Logger Softball Field in Tacoma, Wash.
In the first game, junior Stephanie Hatley (Keizer, Ore./McNary) hit a bomb over the left center fence to give the Loggers a 1-0 lead. The Lutes answered back in the fifth with three runs, including two on a home run by Rachel Wheeler-Hoyt, to take a 3-1 lead. Puget Sound got back within a run in the bottom of the fifth when Hilary Rice (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) turned on the jet to beat out a throw at the plate from the shortstop on a fielder's choice by Lindsay Fujita (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou).
Hadley Schmitt got the win for the Lutes, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits with nine strikeouts in seven innings pitched. Andi Doerflinger (Juneau, Alaska/Juneau-Douglas) took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits in seven innings pitched.
In the second game, the Lutes struck right away when Caitlin Brown hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Heather Walling. PLU added single runs in the third, fourth and fifth but the Loggers got the final runs of the afternoon on another big home run by Hadley that sailed over the left field fence.
Wheeler-Hoyt got the win for PLU, allowing two unearned runs on three hits in seven innings pitched. Auriel Sperberg (Tacoma, Wash./Graham-Kapowsin) took the loss, allowing four runs on 13 hits with five strikeouts in seven innings.
The Loggers and Lutes will meet up again on Sunday afternoon in Parkland. First pitch is scheduled for Noon at the PLU softball field.
