REDLANDS SLIPS PAST LACROSSE, 10-9
TACOMA, Wash. - Redlands' Lisa O'Kane scored the winning goal with just 1:23 remaining as the Redlands Bulldogs slipped past the Puget Sound Loggers, 10-9, in a NCAA Division III women's lacrosse match on Saturday afternoon at Peyton Field in Tacoma, Wash.
The Bulldogs, ranked third in the NCAA West Region rankings, and the Loggers (10-3) traded the first four goals of the match and continued to see-saw back and forth. Lindsay O'Brien (Reading, Vt./Westminster) scored with 1:33 remaining in the first half to tie the game a 6-6 heading into halftime.
In the second period, Logger freshman Sofia Lama (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Torrey Pines) opened up the scoring in the second half but the Bulldogs answered back with three goals to take a 9-7 advantage. O'Brien scored again with 17:19 remaining and then Katie Pavlat (Eugene, Ore./Sheldon) evened the score at 9-9 with a goal at the 17:01 mark. Neither team found the net for the next 15:38 until O'Kane sneaked a shot past Logger keeper Ana Calciano (Farmington, Conn./Miss Porter's School) to give Redlands the 10-9 win.
Lama led the Loggers with three goals and one assist, adding nine ground balls and five draw controls. Calciano made 15 saves for Puget Sound, including 11 in the second half.
Redlands picked up two goals each from Christy Smith, Haley Kern and Rosie Breen. Lindsay Feig made 14 saves to collect the win.
The Loggers end their season with a record of 10-3. The 2008 squad also marked the first time in school history that Puget Sound was ranked in the NCAA Regional Rankings, holding down the sixth spot in the week one rankings.
