WRAPPING UP THE REGULAR SEASON
Regionally ranked for the first time in school history, the Puget Sound Loggers showed their determination last weekend, posting a comeback win over Linfield. This weekend, the Loggers end the regular season against another regionally-ranked team, the Redlands Bulldogs.
The Loggers v. Linfield
Down one goal at halftime, the Puget Sound Loggers posted a monster comeback to collect an 18-11 win over the Linfield Wildcats in a NCAA Division III women's lacrosse match on Saturday on Peyton Field at Baker Stadium in Tacoma, Wash.
The Loggers (10-2) scored the first goal of the game when Sofia Lama (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Torrey Pines) scored about 90 seconds in but the Wildcats then scored four straight and the Loggers had to play from behind, taking an 8-7 deficit into halftime.
In the second period, Linfield scored just over five minutes in but the Loggers then scored nine unanswered goals to pull ahead, 16-9. After Linfield scored one more with six minutes to go, the Loggers quickly added two more to push the lead to 18-10 but the 'Cats didn't give up, scoring one final goal with nine seconds remaining as the Loggers collected the 18-11 win.
Lama scored eight goals on the day to push her season total to 53. Lindsay O'Brien (Reading, Vt./Westminster) added four goals while Lindsay Pearce (Portland, Ore./Sunset) chipped in three goals. Ana Calcian0 (Farmington, Conn./Miss Porter's School) made 16 saves on the day to collect the win.
Linfield was led by five goals from Sammy Smith and two from Melissa DePierro. Becca Levy started in goal for the Wildcats, making 13 saves.
Statistically Speaking
Despite being a young program, the Loggers find themselves representing the West in a number of national statistical categories. Puget Sound is 3rd in scoring offense (17.88 gpg). In addition, the Loggers’ 24 goals against Fontbonne on March 15th is tied for the second most goals scored in a game in DIII this season.
Individually, Sofia Lama is eighth in points per game (6.09) and third in goals per game (4.82). Lama is also 24th nationally in draw controls per game at 3.91.
Regionally Ranked
For the first time in school history, the Puget Sound Loggers found themselves in the official NCAA Regional Rankings. Unfortunately, as quickly as they found themselves in the rankings, they dropped out this week but will have the opportunity to regain a spot in the top six when they host West Region third-ranked Redlands on Saturday.
