AMONG THE BEST IN THE NORTHWEST

Rowing for a conference championship last week, the Loggers showed the rest of the Northwest why they are among the elite in the region, winning the men’s title and finishing a close second on the women’s side. This week, the Loggers stay home for the annual Meyer-Lamberth Cup against Pacific Lutheran.

Last Week

The Puget Sound Logger men's crew program ran away with a conference title while the women's program battled with Western Washington, taking second at the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference Championships on Saturday at Vancouver Lake.

With less-than-ideal conditions, the Logger men won all but one race they entered to collect 42 points. Western Washington was the next closest of the six other schools competiting, finishing with 25 points. The titles is the Loggers 'sixth NCRC championship in the last eight years, including five straight from 2001-05.

On the women's side, the Loggers, ranked sixth in Division III, battled the three-time national champion Vikings in nearly every race. WWU took both Varsity 8+ races by about five seconds each time. The Loggers collected wins in the 2nd Novice 4 and the 2nd Novice 8+. Puget Sound finished with 52.5 points while the Vikings won their fourth straight NCRC title with 60.5 points. Lewis & Clark took third with just 20 points.

In the National Rankings

The Logger women jumped back up to sixth in last week’s Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/USRowing national poll. Trinity (Conn.) and Williams each received five first place votes to tie for the top spot.

In the cMax Ratings, which predicts where boats would finish, the Loggers are ranked third, 11.6 seconds back of Trinity and 9.1 seconds back of Williams.
