LATE COMEBACK DOOMS LOGGERS
SPOKANE, Wash. - Erasing a 6-0 Puget Sound lead, the Whitworth Pirates posted a late comeback to defeat the UPS Loggers, 11-6, in a Northwest Conference softball game on Saturday afternoon in Spokane. Snow in Spokane forced the scheduled doubleheader to be reduced to a single game.
The Logger offense was on fire out of the gate, using a single by Valarie Barone (San Jose, Calif./Leigh) to score Kelli Ishii (Aiea, Hawaii/Punahou) and Lindsay Fujita (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou). Meghan Watson (Brier, Wash./Mountlake Terrace) then gave the Loggers a 3-0 lead on an RBI groundout that scored Victoria Raeburn (Portland, Ore./Gladstone). Puget Sound added two more in the top of the third when Kelsey Scanlan (Vancouver, Wash./Clark CC) singled in Raeburn and then Noelle Vallecorsa (Federal Way, Wash.) singled in Scanlan, giving UPS a 5-0 lead.
Puget Sound got their final run in the top of the fourth when Raeburn singled up the middle to score Ishii. Unfortunately, the bottom of the fourth was when the Pirate bats awoke. After collecting a single run in the bottom of the first, the Bucs added two more in the bottom of the fifth. The wheels came off for the Loggers in the bottom of the sixth when, after two quick outs, the Pirates exploded for eight runs that put them ahead, 11-6, and gave them the NWC win.
Andi Doerflinger (Juneau, Alaska/Juneau-Douglas) took the loss, allowing five runs on just one hit in one-third innings pitched. Kelsey Ayers earned the win for Whitworth, pitching three and two-third innings of scoreless ball while striking out four and allowing just two UPS hits.
The Pirates and Loggers will attempt to conclude the NWC series on Sunday with a rare tripleheader, beginning at 10:00 a.m. in Spokane.
