OFF TO SPOKANE
The Loggers were scheduled to play four games last weekend but the late winter blast prevented UPS from getting three of those four games in. This week, they hope to avoid Mother Nature's wrath as they head to Spokane for four-games with Whitworth.
The Loggers v. St. Martin's
In what was supposed to be a non-conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Logger softball field in Tacoma, Wash., the Puget Sound Loggers fell to the Saint Martin's Saints, 10-0, in the first game before a mixture of rain and hail ended game two in the second inning.
In the first game, the Saints (12-17) took the lead early on a three-run home run by shortstop Holly Morris in the top of the first inning. The Saints' Kristi Sigafoos went deep immediately following but it was determined that the home plate umpire called "no pitch" before the hit happened and the blast was nullified. Saint Martin's added two more runs in the top of the third and a five-run sixth inning game the Saints the six-inning victory, 10-0. Jamie Herrick got the win for Saint Martin's, nearly collecting the no-hitter before Valarie Barone (San Jose, Calif./Leigh) singled in the bottom of the sixth for the lone Puget Sound hit of the game. Bijou Felder (Berkeley, Calif./St. Mary's) took the loss for Puget Sound, allowing 10 runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts in six innings thrown.
In the second inning, the Loggers and Saints found themselves deadlocked at no score in the bottom of the second when the sky opened up, delivering rain and hail to the field. Following a brief rain delay, the coaching staffs and umpires decided to call the game.
Rain, Rain, Go Away…
Following last week's storms, the Loggers have now lost five games to moisture in 2008. The only two that are expected to be made up is a NWC doubleheader on the road at Willamette though a make-up date for those games has not yet been set.
Scouting Whitworth
The Pirates head into this weekend with a record of 8-16 overall, including 5-7 in NWC play. Though not planned this way, this weekend's NWC series with the Loggers might be the first true home games for the Pirates this season as snow has forced other series to be moved out of Spokane. Lace Kerr and Halley Cey lead the Bucs from the plate, averaging .464 and .405 respectively. The Whitworth pitching staff holds a 3.63 ERA while striking out 79 and walking 48 in 152.1 innings pitched.
The Coach
The real strength of the Loggers might just be in the third-base coaches box as Robin Hamilton enters her 22nd season at the helm of the Loggers. Currently Puget Sound's winningest head coach in school history, the Idaho State graduate holds a career record of 452-295-3. In 21 years at UPS, she has had 17 winning seasons, two NAIA runner-up finishes and five Conference and Regional Coach of the year awards.
