STRONG START TO THE SPRING

The Loggers opened up the 2008 season last week by hosting the Daffodil Cup and put together some strong performances, winning five races. This week, the Loggers travel down to Vancouver for the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference Invitational.

Last Week

In the first official event of the 2008 season, the Puget Sound Loggers raced well in both the men's and women's boats on Saturday at the 2008 Daffodil Cup on American Lake in Lakewood, Wash.

The Loggers started things off strong as the men's varsity eight boat edged out Washington state by just over a second to win the first event of the day. In the first women's varsity eight, the Loggers finished second to three-time Division II national champion Western Washington, as the UPS boat finished in a time of 8:13.5. The Vikings of WWU edged the Loggers again in the second varsity eight race but the Loggers cut the gap to just eight seconds in the eight and a half minute race.

The Loggers again won the fourth event, winning the men's novice four by 33 seconds and then in the women's novice four race, the Loggers placed second to Lewis & Clark by just over three seconds. In the first women's novice eight, the Loggers defeated Western Washington by 20 seconds to collect the third win of the day for UPS.

Washington state edged out the Logger men in both the varsity four and novice eight and the Western women took the varsity four but the Loggers won the second women's novice eight by just under seven seconds to collect the fourth win of the day by Puget Sound rowers. Washington state edged out the Loggers in the second men's varsity four but the Loggers ended the day strong with the second UPS boat edging out the first UPS boat in the second women's varsity four.

The Loggers best finish at the national championships came in their first experience as they finished second at the 2003 championships.

The Coach

Sarah Canfield begins her third season as the Crew Program Director and Head Women's Coach at University of Puget Sound. She came to Washington after three years in Massachusetts, acting as the Novice coach for Boston College in 2004-2005 and Smith College from 2002-2004. While at Smith, she was also the Interim Head Coach for the fall season 2003.

The U.S. Rowing Level III certified coach has spent recent summers coaching community rowing programs, working with adult and junior rowers. She was the Head Coach of the Kenai Crewsers Rowing Club in Alaska for two seasons and has spent the past two summers coaching with Boulder Community Rowing in Colorado. She enjoys being able to combine coaching with her love of the outdoors, spending her free time mountain biking, camping or hiking with her dog Chloe.

Canfield graduated from the University of Kansas receiving her Masters in Social Welfare in 2002. She rowed for two years with the KU Club team and four years with the Jayhawk's Varsity Women's Rowing program. She was a four-time recipient of the Jayhawk Scholar award and member of the Commissioner's Honor Roll for the Big XII conference. She received the team's Senior Academic Award in 2002.
