HEADING DOWN I-5

The Loggers had a battle in Tacoma this past weekend with Pacific, dropping two heartbreakers on Sunday. They look to battle back as they head down I-5 to Portland to face Lewis & Clark in a four-game series on Saturday and Sunday.

Loggers on Saturday

On a blustery and cold day at Logger Field, the Pacific Boxers opened the offensive flood gates early and often, toppling the Puget Sound Loggers 16-6 and 13-0 in a Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday in Tacoma.

In game one, the Loggers (11-10, 7-7 NWC) struggled early on the offensive side, but struck gold in the sixth with a single by Shaun Kiriu (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou), scoring Doug Cox (Kailua, Hawaii/Kalaheo). Later in the eighth inning, Joe Newland (Tulalip, Wash./Marysville-Pilchuck) hit a solo home run to left center, his sixth of the season. Jason Powell (Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) would tack on two more runs via a single just past the second baseman. Despite the late UPS offense, Pacific held on to win game one, 16-6.

Tom Glassman (Tacoma, Wash./Biola) picked up the loss for the Loggers, falling to 1-4 on the season. Glassman threw four innings, allowing 10 hits, 10 runs, and striking out four. Sean Dickey, now 3-1, won the game for Pacific, throwing six and two-thirds innings with three hits and on run.

In game two, the Loggers struggle offensively again, allowing Pacific (13-9/12-6) to tally 13 runs on 16 hits. The Loggers picked up three hits on the game including a ninth inning double down the left line by Michael Olsen (Niwot, Colo.). The Loggers would drop game two, 13-0.

Dusty Kauflin (Boulder, Colo.) saw his record fall to 4-2 on the season. He allowed 12 hits and 13 runs in five innings of work. Blaine Knuth picked up a three-hit shutout, improving his record to 3-3 on the season.

Loggers on Sunday

The Puget Sound Loggers put together two late inning rallys in both games of Sunday's Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader, but fell short in both attempts, 6-4 and 4-2, against the Pacific Boxers at Logger Field in Tacoma.

In game one, the Loggers (11-12, 7-9 NWC) found themselves in a 6-3 hole heading into the ninth. Gregorio Beck (Chico, Calif.) opened the inning with a stand-up double. Dakota Resnik (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) legged out a bunt to give the Loggers runners at the corners. Michael Olsen (Niwot, Colo.) then hit a sacrifice fly to score Beck, cutting the Boxer lead to two but Joe Newland (Tulalip, Wash./Marysville-Pilchuck) hit into the 6-4-3 double play to end they rally and give Pacific (15-9, 14-6 NWC) game one, 6-4.

Logger starter Tim Fogarty (Pacifica, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) fell to 1-2 on the season with the loss. Fogarty, going only two innings, gave up six runs on six Boxer hits. Jason Reed (4-1) won the game for the Boxers, going five inning and surrendering six hits and three runs. Tyler Fransen picked up his second save in two innings of work.

In game two, the Loggers plated the first run of the game in the fifth inning, courtesy of a Travis Hernandez (Burlington, Wash./Burlington-Edison) single, scoring Doug Cox (Kailua, Hawaii/Kalaheo). Pacific took the lead in the sixth, 2-1, however it didn't last long as Puget Sound's Newland hit a single into center field, pushing Hernandez across the plate, knotting the game at two apiece.

The Loggers had chances in each of the seventh and eighth innings to plate runs, but Pacific's defense quickly snubbed the scoring attempts. The Boxers offense then took over, playing small ball in the top of the ninth inning, scoring two and ultimately picking up the victory, 4-2.

Jarvis Nohara (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani) picks up his first loss of the season, falling to 3-1. Nohara, appearing in relief duty, threw three and two-third innings, allowing two runs and striking out three. Kyle Barksdale (1-1) also won in relief duty for Pacific. He threw one and one-third innings, facing only four batters of which he struck out three.
