BOXERS BOUNCE LOGGERS

Written by Jermaine Williams, UPS Athletics

TACOMA, Wash. - On a blustery and cold day at Logger Field, the Pacific Boxers opened the offensive flood gates early and often, toppling the Puget Sound Loggers 16-6 and 13-0 in a Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday in Tacoma.

In game one, the Loggers (11-10, 7-7 NWC) struggled early on the offensive side, but struck gold in the sixth with a single by Shaun Kiriu (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou), scoring Doug Cox (Kailua, Hawaii/Kalaheo). Later in the eighth inning, Joe Newland (Tulalip, Wash./Marysville-Pilchuck) hit a solo home run to left center, his sixth of the season. Jason Powell (Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) would tack on two more runs via a single just past the second baseman. Despite the late UPS offense, Pacific held on to win game one, 16-6.

Tom Glassman (Tacoma, Wash./Biola) picked up the loss for the Loggers, falling to 1-4 on the season. Glassman threw four innings, allowing 10 hits, 10 runs, and striking out four. Sean Dickey, now 3-1, won the game for Pacific, throwing six and two-thirds innings with three hits and on run.

In game two, the Loggers struggle offensively again, allowing Pacific (13-9/12-6) to tally 13 runs on 16 hits. The Loggers picked up three hits on the game including a ninth inning double down the left line by Michael Olsen (Niwot, Colo.). The Loggers would drop game two, 13-0.

Dusty Kauflin (Boulder, Colo.) saw his record fall to 4-2 on the season. He allowed 12 hits and 13 runs in five innings of work. Blaine Knuth picked up a three-hit shutout, improving his record to 3-3 on the season.

The Loggers and Boxers will go at it again in a Sunday matinee. The first of two-seven inning games will begin at 12:00 noon.
