GREAT START FOR THE LOGGERS
The Loggers continue a busy stretch of lacrosse this week, hosting SUNY Potsdam on Thursday night before heading down to Forest Grove on Friday for a neutral site match with Pacific.
The Loggers on Spring Break
UPS headed down to sunny Southern California for bring break and played three matches against NCAA DIII opponents. Puget Sound picked up an overtime win at Whittier to kick off the road trip and then made it two-for-two with a convincing win over Pomona-Pitzer. The road trip ended against powerhouse Claremont-M-S, who prevented the Loggers from collecting the California sweep.
The Loggers vs. Oswego State
A strong offensive attack led the Puget Sound Loggers to a 23-18 victory over the visiting Oswego State Lakers in a NCAA Division III women's lacrosse match on Tuesday afternoon on Peyton Field at Baker Stadium in Tacoma, Wash.
The Lakers (0-2) looked to be in control early, scoring the match's first three goals, but following a timeout by Puget Sound (5-2), the Loggers scored six unassisted goals to take a 6-3 lead less than 10 minutes into the game. Puget Sound continued to push the lead, taking a 16-9 advantage into the break.
In the second half, the two teams exchanged runs. The Loggers pushed the lead to as many as nine goals but the Lakers scored the final four goals of the game to tighten the final gap to five goals, 23-18.
Puget Sound was led by freshman Sofia Lama (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Torrey Pines), who finished with six goals and three assists. Junior Jessica Knight (Portland, Ore./Grant) and freshman Katie Pavlat (Eugene, Ore./Sheldon) each added five goals. Lindsay O'Brien (Reading, Vt./Westminster) chipped in three goals and an assist while Lizze Cohen (Issaquah, Wash./Overlake) and Anna Gunderson (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) each finished with two goals. Freshman keeper Ana Calciano (Farmington, Conn./Miss Porter's School) was solid in net, making nine saves for UPS.
Oswego State was led by five goals from Michelle MenDell and four goals and two assists from Rachel Ventresca. Junior Shannon O'Brien made 12 saves for the Lakers while allowing the 23 Puget Sound goals.
Scouting SUNY Potsdam
The Bears, who play at Pacific on Wednesday, hold a record of 2-1 on the 2008 season. Potsdam is averaging 17 goals per game while giving up 11 goals per game. Alisha Schaad stars on offense, having scored 23 goals in just three matches for Potsdam. The Bears' goalies have a save percentage of .340 on the year.
Scouting Oberlin
Oberlin, who plays at Linfield on Wednesday, currently hold a 1-2 record on the year. Last year, Oberlin picked up a 21-16 win over UPS in Ohio. This season, Oberlin is averaging 13.00 goals on offense while allowing 19.00 goals on defense. Freshman Taylor Fey leads the Yeowomen offense with 19 goals on the year, including 10 on Monday at Pacific.
The Coach
A native of the Northwest, Liana Freeman enters her second season leading the Logger lacrosse program. Freeman graduated from University of Redlands in 2005 following a successful playing career and assisted former coach Beth Bricker in 2006.
While at Redlands, Freeman played both attack and defense. She holds a BA in Education from Redlands and a Masters in Education from Puget Sound and while not leading the Loggers, Freeman teaches 3rd grade at a local elementary school.
