Holocaust Survivor to Lecture at Puget Sound
March 20, 2008
TACOMA, Wash. - University of Puget Sound is pleased to welcome lecturer, author, and poet Itka Zygmuntowicz on Thursday, April 24, at 5 p.m., in Kilworth Memorial Chapel. A survivor of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, Zygmuntowicz will deliver an informal talk, "Life Lessons of a Holocaust Survivor." The lecture is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. They may be picked up in advance at Wheelock Student Center Information Desk. Any remaining tickets will be available at the door. For more information on her visit, contact the Office of Spirituality, Service, and Social Justice at 253.879.3374 or visit their Web site.
At age 81, Zygmuntowicz has been active in Holocaust education and awareness since shortly after her arrival in the United States in the 1950s. During the hour-long discussion, she will share her poignant memories of life before the war in Poland, the horrors of the camps and what helped her survive, and how she triumphed over the Nazis using love to combat hatred. Zygmuntowicz's loving remembrances of her parents and grandmother become parables for lessons in living life with humanity, love, and kindness. Courageously sharing her personal journey through poems, sayings, and observations on life, Zygmuntowicz delivers an uplifting message of love, hope, and tolerance in the face of unspeakable hatred and inhumanity.
Zygmuntowicz is a member of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Philadelphia and the Association of Jewish Holocaust Survivors. She is also on the Committee of the Six Million Jewish Martyrs. Her stories have been published in Four Generations of Jewish Women's Spirituality and Women in the Holocaust. In addition to giving talks across the country, Zygmuntowicz has shared her story on a number of radio and television programs, including a documentary titled "Eye On-The Lessons of the Holocaust: From Pain Comes Knowledge."
