Gross Awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

INDIANAPOLIS - Following a successful playing career that concluded in the national quarterfinals, University of Puget Sound senior volleyball player Rachel Gross (Santa Monica, Calif./Milken Community) has been awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, as announced by the NCAA this week.

The Loggers season came to an end last week in a national quarterfinal loss to Wisconsin-Whitewater but the experience gained is sure to bode well for the Loggers in the future.

For the ninth-ranked Puget Sound Logger volleyball team, the end of the line came on Thursday afternoon at the hands of the fifth-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks, 3-0, in the national quarterfinals of the 2007 NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, Ill.

The Loggers dream run through the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship continues this week as they travel to Bloomington, Ill. for the Finals. Puget Sound will take on Wisconsin-Whitewater in the first quarterfinal match on Thursday.

Loggers In The Midwest

TACOMA, Wash. - Both the Puget Sound Logger volleyball and women's soccer teams knew that they would be heading to Illinois this week to continue runs towards the national championship but the details of their adventures became much clearer on Monday. The volleyball team will be representing the entire West Region at the 2007 NCAA Division III National Championships in Bloomington, Ill. while the women's soccer team will be traveling to Wheaton, Ill. for the Sectional portion of the NCAA DIII Women's Soccer Championships. Also competing in nationals this weekend will be members of both the men's and women's cross country teams, who will be running in Northfield, Minn.

Third Time A Charm As Loggers Sweep Lutes

HAYWARD, Calif. - Their opponent may have won the first two times the teams matched up but the 20th-ranked Puget Sound Loggers picked a great place to defeat 13th-ranked Pacific Lutheran for the first time in 2007, sweeping the Lutes (30-27, 30-18, 30-25) in the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship, hosted by Cal State East Bay in Hayward, Calif.

Loggers Open Up NCAA VB Championship With 3-2 Win

HAYWARD, Calif. - It took a comeback effort but the 20th-ranked Puget Sound Loggers picked up a win in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship, ousting Nebraska Wesleyan in five games (24-30, 30-22, 30-22, 23-30, 17-15) in a match played on Thursday at Cal State East Bay in Hayward, Calif.

The long wait was worth it for Coach Massey and his team as they learned of their at-large bid late Sunday evening. The Loggers discovered who their first round opponent would be on Monday morning in Nebraska Wesleyan.

SPOKANE, Wash. - As they prepare for the 2007 NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship, seniors Monica Groves (Keizer, Ore./McNary) and Rachel Gross (Santa Monica, Calif./Milken Community) have been named First Team All-Northwest Conference, the second straight season for both. Also earning honors are sophomores Lindsey Denman (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor) and Kalli Kamphaus (Manson, Wash.) earned named Honorable Mention All-NWC.

INDIANAPOLIS - The NCAA announced brackets early Monday morning for the 2007 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship and the 2007 NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship and the Puget Sound Loggers will be participating in both this season.

#21 Loggers Wrap Up Regular Season With 3-1 Win

SALEM, Ore. - In the final regular season match of the 2007 campaign, the 21st-ranked Puget Sound Loggers held off the host Willamette Bearcats, winning in four games to earn the victory in the Northwest Conference volleyball match on Saturday evening at Cone Field House in Salem, Ore.

Volleyball Holds Off George Fox, 3-1

NEWBERG, Ore. - The Puget Sound Loggers, ranked 21st in the latest AVCA top 25 and ranked fourth in the NCAA West Region, overcame a loss in game one to come back and defeat the George Fox Bruins, 3-1, in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Friday evening in Newberg, Ore.

Making A Case

The Loggers will end the season on the road this year. First up for Puget Sound is George Fox on Friday, November 2nd at 7:00pm. Then it is on to Willamette Saturday evening at 7:00pm. "Everyone is dangerous this time of year.

#23 Loggers Rally For Win On Senior Night, 3-2

TACOMA, Wash. - On a night honoring the seniors, the Puget Sound Loggers rallied back and defeated the Missionaires of Whitman by the scores of 30-27, 20-30, 30-32, 30-21 and 15-12. The Loggers, (15-8 overall and 10-4 NWC) received a monster game from Sophomore Lindsey Denman (Kenmore, Wash) with 20 kills.

Logger Attack Sinks Pirates, 3-1

TACOMA, Wash. - Senior Monica Groves (Keizer, Ore./McNary) sent down 20 kills and sophomore Lindsey Denman (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor) added another 19 as the 23rd-ranked Puget Sound Loggers overpowered the Whitworth Pirates, 3-1 (30-22, 30-23, 27-30, 30-21), in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Friday evening at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma.

Wrapping Up The Home Schedule

It is a must win-out situation for the University of Puget Sound volleyball team, in order to try and solidify a possible NCAA post-season bid. "We no longer control the outcome and we have to both run the table and get some help from other teams to finish 2nd in the conference, which is still no guarantee of advancing," noted Massey.

Boxers Outlast Loggers, 3-2

TACOMA, Wash. - The Boxers of Pacific, (12-7 overall and 7-5 NWC) came out on fire taking the first two games of the match from the Loggers (13-8 and 8-4) and held on to take the five game affair by 30-23, 30-24, 28-30, 19-30 and 15-11 in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Saturday night in Tacoma.

TACOMA, Wash. - Pacific Lutheran came back from two games down to defeat the University of Puget Sound 30-19, 30-25, 25-30, 28-30 and 13-15 in a battle between the nationally ranked opponents in NWC action.

The road doesn't get any easier for Coach Massey and the Puget Sound Volleyball team as they travel eastbound to take on Whitworth College on Friday evening, September 28th at 7:00pm, in Spokane, Washington and then it is on to Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington for a 6:00pm contest on Saturday evening.

#15 Loggers Bounce Back Against Boxers, 3-1

FOREST GROVE, Ore. - After two tough matches against nationally-ranked foes, the 15th-ranked Puget Sound Loggers got back in the win column with a 3-1 win over the Pacific Boxers in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Saturday evening at Pacific Athletic Center in Forest Grove, Ore.

TACOMA, Wash. - Two nationally ranked teams, over 200 digs, 120 kills and two and one half hours later the #12 Pioneers of Cal State-East Bay took the match by the scores of 22-30, 30-23, 34-32, 27-30 and 15-6 over the Loggers.

PARKLAND, Wash. - In a battle of nationally-ranked squads, the 17th-ranked Puget Sound Loggers couldn't push past the 22nd-ranked Pacific Lutheran Lutes, falling 3-1 in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Wednesday evening at Olson Auditorium in Parkland, Wash.

UPS Volleyball Tames Cats, 3-1

TACOMA, Wash. -The University of Puget Sound was up to the challenge of last season's NWC Co-Champion, Linfield College taking the Northwest Conference match three games to one game by the scores of 26-30, 30-17, 30-12 and 30-26. The Loggers offense was in high gear collecting 75 kills to just 45 for Linfield. Leading the way for Puget Sound was Lindsey Denman, (Kenmore, Wash) with 22 and Monica Groves, (Keizer, Ore) with 15. Linfield was paced by Katelyn Baker, (McMinnville, Ore) with 18 kills on the night.

#17 Puget Sound Holds Court Over L&C

TACOMA, Wash. - The Loggers opened Northwest Conference play with a come from behind win over visiting Lewis & Clark by the scores of 27-30, 28-30, 30-17, 30-25 and 15-7. Kalli Kamphaus, (Manson, Wash) and Lindsey Denman, (Kenmore, Wash) led the Loggers with 19 and 17 kills respectively. Monica Groves, (Keizer, Ore) chipped in 14 kills for UPS. Lewis & Clark had three hitters in double digits led by Sara Kettler, (Dana Point, Calif) with 15 and Katherine Fiedler, (San Diego, Calif) and Nicki Smith, (Brea, Calif) with 12 and 11. Puget Sound moves to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in the NWC, while Lewis & Clark drops to 4-7 overall and 0-1 in the NWC.

Making Their Home Debut

Pre-season is over for the Puget Sound Volleyball squad and the rest of the Northwest Conference. The Loggers came out of the two tournaments they participate in with a 5-3 mark and two key wins against nationally ranked opponents, St. Thomas of Minnesota and University of La Verne.

Volleyball Takes Two At Pacific Coast Classic

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Highlighted by a five-game win over sixth-ranked La Verne, the Puget Sound Loggers picked up a pair of wins on the final day of the Pacific Coast Classic to improve to 5-3 on the young season. In addition to the win over the Leopards, the Loggers also picked up a three-game win over Tufts.

Volleyball Splits In Southern California

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Playing away from home for the second straight weekend, the Puget Sound Logger volleyball team picked up a split on Friday afternoon at the Pacific Coast Classic, hosted by Pomona-Pitzer. The Loggers lost in three straight games to Haverford before bouncing back for a three-game sweep of 17th-ranked Redlands.

Staying in the Pacific Time Zone

Another road trip is on the schedule for the Logger volleyball team. This weekend Puget Sound will travel to Claremont, California for the Pacific Coast Class volleyball tournament to be hosted by Claremont College, September 7th and 8th. Fifteen teams will participate in the tournament.

Another Split In Atlanta For Volleyball

ATLANTA - Taking on a pair of NCAA tournament participants from a year ago, the Puget Sound Logger volleyball team earned a split for the second straight day. The Loggers defeated Christopher Newport in the first game of the day before falling to host, and fifth-ranked, Emory in the second match.

Volleyball Splits With Nationally-Ranked Foes To Open 2007 Season

ATLANTA - If the season opener is any sort of indication of how the 2007 season will go, the Puget Sound Logger volleyball team is going to be among the tops in the nation as the Loggers split their season-opening matches, including a five-game win over 11th-ranked St. Thomas (Minn.) at the Emory Classic in Atlanta, Ga.

Loggers Head Cross-Country To Open 2007 Campaign

Head Coach Mark Massey begins is 12th season at the helm of the Loggers' Volleyball program and 22nd overall. Coach Massey has a 195-89 record at Puget Sound and has a 268-197-8 overall career coaching mark. The Loggers look to come at you with different looks this season.

Volleyball Among Top Schools In Preseason Coaches Poll

SPOKANE, Wash. - After a third place finish in 2006, the Puget Sound Logger volleyball squad is expected to contend yet again for the Northwest Conference title in 2007, as the NWC released the preseason coaches poll on Tuesday evening.
