HEADING SOUTH FOR THE BREAK

Following a weekend sweep of the Whitman Missionaries, the Puget Sound Loggers head to southern California for a four game swing with Claremont, UMass-Dartmonth (at Redlands), Redlands, and Occidental.

Loggers on Saturday

The Puget Sound Logger offense was on showcase on Saturday afternoon as they picked up two wins over Whitman, 8-4 and 14-1, in a Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader at Logger Field in Tacoma, Wash.

In the opener, Puget Sound (6-3, 4-2 NWC) began their offensive display in the bottom of the first with a lead-off single by Sean Kiriu (Honolulu, Hawaii) and double from Dakota Resnik (Bellevue, Wash.). Joe Newland (Tulalip, Wash.) was hit by pitcher Sean Day, sending Kiriu across for the Loggers first score. Following a sacrifice fly by Gregorio Beck (Chico, Calif) sending Resnik home, Doug Cox (Kailua, Hawaii) was hit, scoring Michael Olsen (Niwot, Colo.).

The Loggers picked up two runs in the fourth inning in solo fashion as Olsen and Newland both hit solo home runs, pushing the Logger lead to 6-1. In the sixth, Jason Powell (Redwood, City, Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, plating another Logger run. Beck sent the final run in on a RBI double to the centerfield fence.

Tom Glassman (Tacoma, Wash) picked up his first win of the season, pitching seven and two-thirds, giving up seven hits and three runs.

Game two saw 16 Logger hits, including three homeruns. Newland opened the game up with a three-run homerun, plating Kiriu and Olsen in the opening frame.

In the third, the heart of the Logger line-up again took charge with six runs on four hits. Beck's screaming single into left center scored two Loggers and was soon followed by a three-run double from Kiriu.

Olsen hit his fifth homerun of the season to lead off the fourth inning as the Loggers picked up run number 10 for the game. Beck continued to pick up RBIs as his single to left sent in Newland. Beck would later score off a sacrifice by Sean Bayha (Arlington, Wash.).

Beck capped off the Loggers scoring with his first homerun of the season to left center, plating Newland.

Dusty Kauflin (Boulder, Colo.) pitched seven and one-thirds, giving up only one run, one hit, and striking out four in the Loggers 14-1 victory of the Missionaries.

Loggers on Sunday

The Puget Sound Logger Baseball team earned a season sweep of Whitman following a pair of wins, 8-2 and 10-3, in a Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Logger Field.

In game one, it looked to be pitching duel as Whitman ace Pete Stadmeyer and Logger starter Tim Fogarty (Pacifica, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) battled through two innings. The Loggers took an early lead in the first inning but Whitman picked up two runs in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead.

The Loggers would answer big in the bottom of the third capped off by Michael Olsen's (Niwot, Colo./Niwot) third home run of the weekend. The Olsen homerun plated two other Loggers, giving Puget Sound a 4-2 lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.

In the sixth inning, the Loggers added four more runs courtesy of three singles and a two-out double by Spencer Crace (Wilsonville, Ore./Wilsonville). Shaun Kiriu (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) sent a screamer into center field, scoring both Doug Cox (Kailau, Hawaii/Kalaheo) and Travis Hernandez (Burlington, Wash./Burlington-Edison) to help the Loggers picked up the win, 8-2.

Jarvis Nohara (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani) picked up the win for the Loggers in four and a third innings of work, giving up two hits and striking out a pair.

In the second game, the Loggers put up 10 runs in the series-finale with Whitman including three different three-run innings. Kiriu led off the first inning with a double down the right field line and Dakota Resnik (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) and Olsen would both follow with singles of their own with Olsen's scoring Resnik. Taking advantage of a few Whitman errors, the Loggers took an early 3-0 lead.
Joe Newland (Tulalip, Wash./Marysville-Pilchuck) slugged his third home run of the weekend in the second inning, pushing the Logger lead to 6-0. In the fourth, the Loggers again scored three runs, assisted in large part by David Thirlby's (Seattle, Wash./O'Dea) two-run double to the center field fence. The Loggers would go on to win by a final tally of 10-3.

Logger freshman Cameron Duvall (Lakewood, Wash./Lakes) picked up his first win of the young season, giving up two hits and striking out seven.
