LACROSSE FALLS IN SEASON OPENER
TACOMA, Wash. - Taking the field for the first time in 2008, the Puget Sound Loggers fell in the season opener, 19-12, to the Kenyon College Ladies in a NCAA Division III women's lacrosse match on Saturday morning on East Athletic Field in Tacoma, Wash.
Kenyon (2-0) scored the first four goals of the match to take an early lead over Puget Sound (0-1). The Logger finally got on the board with 17:46 remaining in the first half on a goal by freshman Sofia Lama (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Torrey Pines). The two squads traded goals for the remainder of the half as Kenyon took a 9-5 lead into the break.
In the second half, the two teams again traded goals until Kenyon scored three straight goals in the final eight minutes to put the Loggers away. Puget Sound outshot Kenyon 42-30 on the match but it wasn't enough to collect the win.
The Loggers were led by three goals apiece from Lama and Katie Schlesinger (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lakeridge). Lindsay O'Brien (Reading, Vt./Westminster) added a pair of goals in the first game of her junior season. Freshman Ana Calciano (Farmington, Conn./Miss Porter's School) made eight saves in net for UPS.
Kenyon was led in scoring by Jackie Shirreffs, who finished with five goals. Alicia Florin added four goals while Amanda Drummond chipped in three goals. Chase Kreuter was solid in net, making 17 saves for the Ladies.
The Loggers return to action on Sunday when they take on Pacific at 2:00 p.m. on Peyton Field at Baker Stadium in Tacoma, Wash.
