International Student Mentor Program

The International Student Mentor Program provides an opportunity for new and returning international students to meet with student mentors through various social activities to ensure that their transition into the Puget Sound community is a supportive and positive experience. Participating as a peer mentor is an excellent way to support the international community at Puget Sound as well as a great chance to learn about other cultures and countries.

The International Student Mentor Program is now accepting applications for mentors, programmers, and coordinators for the 2008-2009 academic school year.  If you are interested, please take the time to fill out an application and return it to ISM Coordinator Brittany Howe by April 4th, 2008.  Please contact Brittany with any questions or comments regarding the program or application process at bhowe@ups.edu.

2007-2008 Student Mentor Profiles

Neva Wilson
I am studying Biology here at UPS and should be graduating in the fall of 2008. I would like to get a job either in the medical field or working with children in some way. Before coming to UPS I lived in Nevada City, a small historic mining town in northern California where I participated in aquatic sports such as the swim team and water polo. After my second year of high school I traveled and lived with a family in Rovaniemi, Finland for six weeks. It was a great summer for me and I really enjoyed being able to live in a new place and see new things. Here at UPS I enjoy watching some of the sports games and hanging out with my friends. My classes are usually really interesting and I always enjoy the clear days when you can see Mt. Rainier.

Adrienne Kehn
Adrienne is my name and traveling the world is my game. In other words, I have fallen in love with the study of languages and all things French. I was incredibly fortunate to be accepted into the UPS Dijon 2007 study abroad program, and found it a highly valuable experience in many ways, including a crucial step towards fluency. I hail from Boulder, Colorado, one of the highest and driest cities in the country, and while I appreciate the majestic beauty of the mountains, I willingly trade it for the water-logged dreamland that is the Northwest. As a matter of fact, much of my decision to become a Logger was based upon the climate and campus, although I have thankfully discovered that the classes are worth my while as well, especially in the French department (hence my decision to become a French major). If there were one word to describe my experience at UPS thus far, I would have to say "expansion" - of self, of dreams, of perception, of education, and above all, of acceptance.

Kelly La Mar

Hello, my name is Kelly and I will be a junior in the Fall. I am an International Business major and Environmental Studies minor. In the Spring I will be studying abroad in Madrid, Spain. This summer I am in California participating in an internship at an environmental consulting firm. I spent my whole life in Southern California (specifically Irvine) and then decided that I needed to move to Washington in order to attend the school I wanted. While growing up, I played just about every sport; my favorite sport, however, and the one I played the longest, was hockey. I chose to come to UPS because it was a small liberal arts school with a business program. Although I had some doubts freshman year, I now know that I have made the right decision. Everyone here is very friendly and it is extremely easy to meet people while living in the dorms.
