ROUND TWO

It took a monster comeback on Friday night but the Loggers wrapped up the first half of Northwest Conference play with an impressive 7-1 mark after picking up wins at Lewis & Clark and Willamette. This week, the second half begins at home against Pacific and George Fox.

The Loggers vs. Lewis & Clark

Behind a career-high 34 points from junior guard Antwan Williams (Portland, Ore./Madison), the 11th-ranked Puget Sound Loggers erased a 20-point half-time deficit to earn an overtime victory, 92-87, over the Lewis & Clark Pioneers in a Northwest Conference men's basketball game on Friday evening in Portland, Ore.

In the first period, the Pioneers (9-6, 3-4 NWC) opened up the game with a 15-0 run to put the Loggers (13-2, 6-1 NWC) far behind early. The Loggers finally got on the board at the 12:41 mark when Williams hit a three-ball. L&C continued to pull ahead, taking a 42-22 lead into the break.

In the second period, the Pioneers fell apart as the Loggers turned on the jets. After building a lead of as many as 26 points, the Pioneers allowed the Logger to get within 10 points with just over three minutes remaining and with the Loggers down by two points with six seconds remaining, Williams hit a jumper with no-time left on the clock to send the game into overtime.

In the extra period, the Loggers continued to dominate, not allowing Lewis & Clark a score until just 58 seconds remaining in the extra period as Puget Sound earned the 92-87 win.

The Loggers were led by the 34 points and 10 rebounds from Williams, including 11-of-18 from the field and 10-of-13 from the charity stripe. Junior Jason Foster (Tacoma, Wash./Foss) and senior Taylor Marsh (Lynnwood, Wash./Meadowdale) each added 19 points with Foster adding nine boards. Robert Krauel (Phoenix, Ariz./North Canyon) chipped in 11 points to go with six rebounds in his first start of the season.

The Pioneers were led by 22 points from David Berggren. Nick Thierry added 15 points and Joey Toboni chalked up 13 in the loss. Thomas Tillery and Gene Rivera each recorded 12 points for the Pios.

The Loggers vs. Willamette

Wrapping up the first round of Northwest Conference play, the 11th-ranked Puget Sound Loggers breezed past the Willamette Bearcats, 90-75, in a NWC men's basketball game on Saturday evening in Salem, Ore.

The Loggers (14-2, 7-1 NWC) traded the leads with the Bearcats (6-11, 4-4 NWC) for most of the first half. Puget Sound held the lead at the end of the first half, taking a 43-34 advantage into the break.

In the second half, it was all Puget Sound as the Loggers continued to build their lead over the Bearcats, eventually taking the 90-75 victory.

The Loggers were led by 25 points from junior guard Antwan Williams (Portland, Ore./Madison). Jason Foster (Tacoma, Wash./Foss) added 21 while Robert Krauel (Phoenix, Ariz./North Canyon) and James Pinkney (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine) added 15 and 11 respectively off the bench.

Willamette picked up 20 points from Mike Smith and 13 each from Corey Constantino and Kyler McClary. Cameron Mitchell added 12 points and 11 boards off the bench.

Statistically Speaking

The Loggers continue to lead the NWC in scoring offense (96.5 ppg), field goal percentage (.505), steals (13.06 spg), turnover margin (+7.88), and attendance (1070).

Individually, Robert Krauel leads the NWC in field goal percentage (.594). Antwan Williams is tops in assists (6.38) and steals (3.00).

Nationally, the Loggers offense is ranked fourth in the country while the scoring margin of +15.1 is ninth in the country. The Loggers are seventh in steals per game and 14th in field goal percentage. Individually, Antwan Williams is 10th in assists and 12th in steals.

Among The Nation's Best

The Loggers made a return to the top ten nationally this week, retaking the seventh spot in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25.

Chasing 1,000

The Loggers have a few players who could score their 1,000th point the maroon and white this season, including a pair of juniors.

Junior guard Antwan Williams has 920 points in 69 games and would have to average 10.0 ppg the rest of the way to reach 1,000 by the end of the year. Also a junior, Jason Foster has 976 points in 68 games, including 66 started. Foster should hit the quadruple-digit mark this week against either Pacific or George Fox.

Scouting Pacific

The Boxers come to Tacoma this week holding a record of 6-12 overall and 4-5 in NWC play. Last week, they picked up a big win over Pacific Lutheran, 94-85, behind 40 points from NWC Player of the Week Garold Howe. Howe leads the Boxer offense with 14.7 ppg while Joe Van Domelen is adding 13.8 ppg and a team-high 6.6 rpg.

Scouting George Fox

The Bruins head into this weekend with a record of 5-12 overall and 1-7 in NWC play. Their lone NWC win came last Friday in an 82-75 overtime win at Whitman. Brent Satern leads the Bruin offense with 15.1 ppg as well as a team-high 108 assists this season. Evan Atwater is chipping in 14.2 ppg while Mark Metzler leads the defensive effort with 5.1 rpg.

The Coach

Justin Lunt enters his second season as head coach of the Logger men's basketball program. A graduate of Pacific Lutheran, Lunt is a native of San Diego, Calif. Heading into this weekend, Lunt now has a career record of 32-9, including 18-6 in the Northwest Conference.
