THE FINAL WHISTLE
Starting three seniors, two juniors, two sophomores and four freshman, the 2007 Puget Sound women's soccer team showed the country that the future is bright in the Northwest as the Loggers advanced to the Sectional Final of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship for the fifth time in the last six seasons.
The Loggers vs. Wartburg
Sophomore Janece Levien (Beaverton, Ore.) recorded yet another hat-trick and set a new school record for goals in a season as the Puget Sound Loggers picked up a 3-2 overtime win over the Wartburg Knight in the Sectional Round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship on Friday evening in Wheaton, Ill.
The Knights (16-5-2) scored the game's first goal and the only score of the first period when Amber Bennett found Lauren Thomas, who beat Logger keeper Kallie Wolfer (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) for a 1-0 halftime lead.
Levien scored her record-breaking goal in the 57th minute to tie the score at one goal apiece. As the game looked to be headed to overtime, Levien scored again in the 85th minute but Wartburg answered back in the 86th minute to force the extra time.
At the 107:31 mark on the clock, Levien ended it, booting the ball into the back of the net for the game-winner and a showdown with top-ranked Wheaton on Saturday.
Wolfer finished with three saves on the day. Rachel Coleman made nine saves for the Knights in 91:28 played after coming in for Christian Ernst.
The Loggers vs. Wheaton
For the fifth time in the last six seasons, the Puget Sound Loggers played their way to the Sectional Final of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship. In 2007, the ride ended there as they lost to the top-ranked Wheaton (Ill.) Thunder, 2-0, in a game played on Saturday evening in Wheaton, Ill.
The Thunder (25-0-0) outshot the Loggers (21-2-1) 11 to 3 in the first period but sophomore keeper Kallie Wolfer (Salt Lake City, Utah) kept the ball out of the net, making five saves in the first 45 minutes of the match to force a 0-0 draw into the halftime break.
In the second half, Wheaton broke the scoreless tie in the 49th minute when Kira Davis connected on a free kick from about 40 yards out. Wolfer continued to be strong in net, making another four saves in the second period, but the Thunder struck again in the 86th minute when Erin Hodina got ahold of the rebound following a Libby Passiales shot and Hodina put the ball in net for the 2-0 win to send the defending national champions into the national semifinals.
The Loggers were able to put eight shots up against the Thunder but only two were able to find the goal and Kristin Eggert made stops on both those balls to collect the shutout.
Puget Sound ends the season with a winning percentage of .896, the second-highest in school history.
