#9 LOGGERS END SEASON IN QUARTERFINALS
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - For the ninth-ranked Puget Sound Logger volleyball team, the end of the line came on Thursday afternoon at the hands of the fifth-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks, 3-0, in the national quarterfinals of the 2007 NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, Ill.
The Loggers (20-9) picked up the first point of the match on a kill by sophomore Lindsey Denman (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor) but the Warhawks (35-4) controlled the match from that point on, as UWW took the first game 30-17 as the Loggers hit just .070 in the first set.
The Loggers had another sub par hitting percentage in the second game, putting down 10 kills but making eight attack errors for a .045 clip. Despite that, the Loggers were able to keep it close for the first half of game two, even holding a 13-12 advantage at one point but the Warhawks then put together an eight-point run to take a 20-13 advanatage. Puget Sound couldn't catch up, dropping the second set, 30-23.
In the final game of the quarterfinal, the Loggers pulled out to a quick 10-5 lead but the Warhawks quickly caught up, going on a 14-3 run to pull back ahead of UPS and again, the Loggers couldn't find a way to recover as a 30-24 UWW victory in game three gave them the match and ended the Loggers season.
Puget Sound was led by 10 kills from Emma Bryant (South St. Paul, Minn./Wisconsin-Superior), who hit for a percentage of .421 on the day. Setter Jamee Fred (Centennial, Colo./Grandview) put up 24 assists to go with 11 digs and the Warhawks kept the ball away from libero Rachel Gross (Santa Monica, Calif./Milken Community) limiting her to just 11 digs as well.
Wisconsin-Whitewater was led by 10 kills from Kelly Sorenson. Kate Lazotte assisted on 38 kills during the match and had six of the Warhawks' 14 service aces on the day. With the win, UWW will take on either Amherst or Juniata in the first of two national semifinal matches on Friday.
The Loggers finish the season with 20 wins for just the third time since joining Division III and for the first time since 2002.
