LOGGERS END SEASON WITH 34-13 LOSS TO WHITWORTH
TACOMA, Wash. - On an afternoon celebrating the 16 Seniors of the Puget Sound Logger football team and honoring the parents of the squad, the Whitworth Pirates spoiled the party by scoring on their first three possessions of the game in a Northwest Conference football game on Saturday afternoon at Peyton Field at Baker Stadium in Tacoma.
The Pirates of Whitworth (8-2 overall, 6-0 NWC) ran out to a 20-0 lead over the Puget Sound Loggers (4-5 overall, 2-4 NWC). Whitworth kept the pressure on the Loggers all afternoon and came away with the 34-13 win. The Whitworth offense was in high gear with 510 total offense as quarterback Kory Kemp threw for 95 yards in the game and two touchdowns and the rushing attack was just as potent collecting 270 yards on the ground, using the legs of Chris Ahsing and Adam Anderson for a majority of the carries to combine for 186 yards.
The Logger offense was held in check throughout most of the game but the workman like approach of Senior Silas Paul (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) in pounding the ball up the middle or breaking it out wide for big plays. Paul finished with 136 yards on 20 carries and one touchdown for the Loggers and added 21-yards on pass receptions. Spencer Crace (Wilsonville, Ore.) connected on just 10-21 for 77 yards, but threw two interceptions. Mike Griffith (Freedom, Calif./Oakley) had two carries for the Loggers, one of which went for 15 yards and the Loggers' second touchdown of the game.
Whitworth got on the board at the 8:50 mark in the first quarter on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Kemp to Andy Largent the PAT was good for the 7-0 Pirate lead. Whitworth knocked on the door again in the first quarter with a 44-yard touchdown run by Adam Anderson. The Loggers blocked the PAT, (13-0). The Pirates put together an eight play, 44-yard scoring drive to push out to the 20-0 lead.
Late in the second quarter the Loggers' Trevor Beck (Chico, Calif.) caused a fumble on a Whitworth pass reception and Dan Mensonides (Tacoma, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) recovered the ball at the Whitworth 48. Turnovers were costly for UPS as they gave the ball right back to the Pirates just two plays later. The Logger defense was able to hold until the 2:30 mark of the second quarter as Kemp connected with Anderson for a 25-yard touchdown pass making the score 27-0 after the PAT was good.
The Pirates opened the third quarter with a bang holding the Loggers to a three-and-out series and scoring in a two-play series for on a 59-yard rush by Chris Ahsing and a five-yard pass to Largent in the end zone. Again the Loggers were three-and-out but UPS' defense did not break, holding Whitworth back on a fourth and 15. Loggers took over on downs. Puget Sound could not capitalize on their defense's efforts and the third quarter ended with the Pirates leading 34-0.
The Loggers got on the board with a big play of Silas, a 35-yard run to the Whitworth 16 yard line. Paul got the reward, running the ball in for the first UPS score but the PAT was blocked. The Loggers held the Pirates on the next possession taking over at their own 28-yard line. The Loggers then put together a solid series with mixture of runs and passing cumulating in a 15-yard touchdown run by Griffith, for the final score Whitworth 34 and Puget Sound 13.
The Logger defense made most of its' time on the field with Tyler Vlasak (Tacoma, Wash./Sumner) recording five solo tackles and five tackle assists. Brain Walker (Keizer, Ore./McNary) and Mensonides each collected five solo tackles as well as four tackle assists on the afternoon.
