LOGGER MEN HUNT DOWN BRUINS, 4-2
NEWBERG, Ore. - Andrew Hewitt (Monroe, Wash./Archbishop Murphy) scored the games first goal less than two minutes into the contest and the Loggers never let up as Puget Sound breezed past the George Fox Bruins, 4-2, in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Friday afternoon in Newberg, Ore.
Hewitt's goal at the 1:55 mark gave the Loggers (14-3-1, 9-3-1 NWC) a 1-0 lead over the Bruins (3-12-3, 1-9-3 NWC). Taylor Hyde (Sandy, Utah/Waterford) took a pass from Greg Swanson (University Place, Wash./Curtis) in the 20th minute for a 2-0 lead. The Loggers continued to pile it on when freshman Kyle Benson (Lynnwood, Wash./Kamiak) took a pass from Mark Conrad (Seattle, Wash./Willamette) to give UPS a 3-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Bruins cut the Logger lead down to two goals when Sean Daughtry was fed by a Peter Luginbill corner kick and the shot by Daughtry got past Logger keeper Pete Van Sant (Santa Cruz, Calif.). Freshman Jackson Lindeke (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Paul Academy) answered back quickly for the Loggers, taking a pass from Conrad just 28 seconds later for the Loggers' fourth goal of the afternoon. GFU's Brian Story scored the game's final goal in the 63rd minute but it wasn't enough to prevent the Loggers from capturing the 4-2 victory.
The Loggers made just one save on the day, a stop by reserve keeper Scott Macha (Eugene, Ore./Marist) in the final 20 minutes of the game. UPS outshot George Fox, 12-9, and outfouled the Bruins as well, 14-8.
Puget Sound will wrap up the regular season on Saturday afternoon when they visit Pacific. They will then wait until Sunday evening to find out from the NCAA if they have earned a bid to the NCAA Championship Tournament, which begins next week.
