BREAKING RECORDS
In what has officially turned into a record-setting season, the Puget Sound Loggers head into their final two home contests this week still undefeated on the 2007 season and still in sole possession of first place in the Northwest Conference. The Loggers host Pacific Lutheran on Wednesday and will then wrap up the home portion of the schedule on Saturday against Linfield.
The Loggers vs. Willamette
Using a pair of goals from sophomore Janece Levien (Beaverton, Ore.), the fourth-ranked Puget Sound Loggers stayed undefeated on the 2007 campaign with a 3-2 win over the Willamette Bearcats in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Saturday afternoon in Salem, Ore.
The Bearcats (4-6-2, 3-5-2 NWC) took the lead in the 27th winute when Alex Batzer headed in a corner kick from Kelsey Rogel to give Willamette a 1-0 lead. The Bearcats lead lasted just 30 seconds as Levien scored the first of her two on a shot from 10 yards out to even things up at 1-1. Levien gave the Loggers the lead in the 31st minute on a shot from nine yards out into an empty net.
The Loggers (13-0-0, 9-0-0 NWC) made it 3-1 in the 70th minute when Fiona Gornick (Portland, Ore./Grant) earned possession of a loose ball and shot from about eight yards out to pick up her seventh goal of the year. Lauren Miller of Willamette tried to lead the Bearcat comeback with a goal in the 78th minute but it wasn't enough as Puget Sound earned the 3-2 win.
Logger keeper Kallie Wolfer (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) made two saves to collect the win. The powerful Logger offense outshot the Bearcats 31-7 on the game.
The Loggers vs. Lewis & Clark
The fourth-ranked Puget Sound Loggers stayed undefeated on the 2007 campaign, putting together a 3-1 in over the visiting Lewis & Clark Pioneers in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Sunday afternoon on East Athletic Field in Tacoma, Wash. The Loggers were given 15 corner kick opportunities during the game, compared with just one for L&C.
Puget Sound (14-0-0, 10-0-0 NWC) made it 1-0 just 1:32 into the second half when Katie Gillette (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley) got her foot on a rebound following a Nora Germano save and booted the ball into the net. In the 76th minute, Janece Levien (Beaverton, Ore.) scored her NWC-leading 13th goal of the season, heading in a corner kick from Kandace Logan (Tacoma, Wash./Barry Univ.) to give UPS the 2-0 lead.
Lewis & Clark joined in the fun in the 82nd minute when Sophie Trick took a pass from Katie Burnett to spoil the Loggers shutout bid and tighten things up a 2-1. In the 88th minute, Nikki Graff (Corvallis, Ore./Crescent Valley) put the nail in the coffin, firing a bullet from the upper left corner of the box past Germano for a 3-1 Logger victory.
Kallie Wolfer (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) made one save for the Loggers, who limited the Pios to just two shots on goal. Germano made seven saves on the day, with the L&C defense earning a team save as well.
National Attention
The Loggers head into their second straight week as the fourth ranked team in the nation, according to both the NSCAA/adidas National Rankings and the D3Kicks.com Top 25.
Statistically Speaking
The Loggers as a team lead the NWC in a number of categories, including shots (341), goals (42), goals allowed (36), goals against average (0.43), shutouts (10), corners (70), and attendance (250 avg/g). Individually, Janece Levien leads the NWC in shots (79), points (27) and goals (13). Sophomore keeper Kallie Wolfer is tops in goals against average (0.44), save percentage (.871) and shutouts (6.0).
On the national stage, the Loggers are 11th in shutout percentage (0.714) and 13th in goals against average (0.429). Kallie Wolfer is 19th nationally in goals against average (0.439).
Breaking Records
With the pair of wins over the weekend, the 2007 Loggers have set a new record for consecutive wins, breaking their mark of 12 straight wins in both 2000 and 2005. Senior Adrienne Folsom has also secured herself of a school-record when she graduates, having scored 20 game-winning goals for the Loggers in 79 games played thus far.
Scouting Pacific Lutheran
The Lutes head into today's game with a record of 3-9-2 overall and 2-7-1 in Northwest Conference play. Last week, PLU picked up a 4-2 win against Lewis & Clark to break a six-game winless streak. Both of their NWC wins have come against L&C. Offensively, Melissa Buitrango leads the way for PLU, having scored four goals and assisting on two others in 14 games played. Defensively, Amanda Tschauner has seen the majority of time in net, allowing 22 goals in 1258:10 for a 1.57 GAA.
Scouting Linfield
The Wildcats come into the weekend with a record of 5-7-1 on the season, including 4-6 in NWC play. Last week, the Wildcats lost a pair of games at home, falling to Whitworth, 2-1, and Whitman, 1-0. Steph Caster has led the Linfield offense, scoring three times in 10 games played. Kelsey Hasselblad has seen all the time in net this season, allowing 20 goals in 1208:16 for a 1.49 GAA and has made 86 saves for an .811 save percentage.
The Coach
Leading the Loggers in 2007 is six-time Northwest Conference Coach of the Year Randy Hanson, who has put together a record of 165-49-21 through the weekend in 11 seasons with the Loggers.
