IN THE LEAD AFTER THE FIRST LAP
The Loggers head into the second half of Northwest Conference play this week after a perfect run through the first half of NWC games. This week, the Loggers travel down to Willamette on Saturday before returning to Tacoma on Sunday to take on Lewis & Clark on East Athletic Field in Tacoma.
The Loggers vs. Pacific
It took until the mid-second half but the fifth-ranked Puget Sound Loggers were able to put a pair of goals on the scoreboard to get past the Pacific Boxers, 2-0, in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Saturday aftenroon at Peyton Field in Tacoma, Wash.
After a scoreless first half, the Loggers (11-0-0, 7-0-0 NWC) got on the scoreboard in the 64th minute when Alyx Tilley (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia) found Janece Levien (Beaverton, Ore.) in front of the net to give Puget Sound a 1-0 lead over the Boxers (4-6-1, 2-5-0 NWC). About 10 minutes later, the Loggers scored again, this time it was Lauren Gehring (Port Orchard, Wash./South Kitsap) taking a pass from Levien to score the goal and give Puget Sound the 2-0 win.
The Loggers were offensively superior to the Boxers, outshooting Pacific 37-3 on the game. Logger keeper Kallie Wolfer (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) was only forced to make one save to collect the shutout. Sydney Vincent made 12 saves for Pacific but allowed the two goals.
The Loggers vs. George Fox
The only goal of the game came on a penalty kick in the 23rd minute but that was all the fifth-ranked Puget Sound Loggers needed to stay undefeated on the 2007 season, picking up a 1-0 win over the George Fox Bruins in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Sunday afternoon at Peyton Field in Tacoma, Wash.
Following a foul in the box at the 22:46 mark, Fiona Gornick (Portland, Ore./Grant) was given a penalty kick and she was able to put the ball past George Fox keeper Jessica Cardwell. The Loggers outshot the Bruins on the day, 21-5, forcing Logger keeper Kallie Wolfer (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) to only make one save while collecting the shutout.
National Attention
The Loggers moved up one spot in the D3Kicks.com Top 25, taking over the fourth spot after three straight weeks at the number five spot. The Loggers also moved into the fourth spot in the NSCAA/adidas National Rankings after spending last week at number five.
Statistically Speaking
The Loggers as a team lead the NWC in a number of categories, including shots (276) goals allowed (3), goals against average (0.25), shutouts (10) and attendance (262 avg/g). Individually, Janece Levien leads the NWC in shots (64), and goals (10). Adrienne Folsom is tops in the conference in points (23) and is second in goals (8). Sophomore keeper Kallie Wolfer is tops in goals against average (0.21), save percentage (.929) and shutouts (6.0).
On the national stage, the Loggers are second in shutout percentage (0.833), sixth in goals against average (0.25) and ninth in save percentage (0.914).. Kallie Wolfer is sixth nationally in goals against average (0.213) and 11th in save percentage (.929).
Scouting Willamette
The Bearcats, just one year removed from a trip to the NCAA Tournament, sit at 4-5-1 in the 2007 season, including 3-4-1 in NWC play. Last week, Willamette won both their games, defeating Pacific Lutheran and Pacific. Lauren Miller leads the team offensively with five goals on the year. Defensively, Kelli Gano has seen most of time in net for Willamette, allowing six goals in 605:00 for a 0.89 GAA and an .857 save percentage.
Scouting Lewis & Clark
The Pioneers head into the weekend with a record of 1-8-1 overall, including 1-7-0 in the Northwest Conference. L&C's lone win came on Sep. 20 with a 4-1 win over Pacific. Since then, the Pios have lost five straight. Lisa Housman leads the L&C offense with four goals on the season. Nora Germano has seen all but 13 minutes in net, allowing 22 goals in 917:08 for a 2.16 GAA.
The Coach
Leading the Loggers in 2007 is six-time Northwest Conference Coach of the Year Randy Hanson, who has put together a record of 163-49-21 through the weekend in 11 seasons with the Loggers.
