CONTINUING THE STRONG START

After a strong opening to the season at the Sundodger Open on Sept. 15, the Loggers will head down to Oregon this week to run in the Willamette Inviational in Salem. The men will run at 9:00 a.m. with the women running at 9:45 a.m.

Sundodger Open

Sophomore Emily Timmer (Tacoma, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) became the first Logger since 2001 to win the Sundodger Open, hosted by the University of Washington, as the Puget Sound women finished third and the men finished fifth. The race was held at Lincoln Park in West Seattle.

Timmer finished the 6k course in 21:30 making her the first UPS runner to win the event since Dana Boyle did it in 2001, the same year she won the NCAA Division III Championship meet. Senior Brittany Hodgson (Grants Pass, Ore.) had a strong race herself, finishing fifth with a time of 21:52. Liana Roberts (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) finished 32nd in a time of 23:30 as the Loggers placed third in the team standings, trailing only Simon Fraser and University of British Columbia.

On the men's side, Trevor Hanlin (Grants Pass, Ore.) was the highest finishing Logger, running the 8k course in 25:39 to finish 18th. Francis Reynolds (Palo Alto, Calif.) took 24th with a time of 25:53 while Cam Nakano (Aloha, Ore./Hillsboro) finished the race in 26:39 to finish 55th overall. As a team, the Logger men finished fifth but beat a number of Division II schools in the process.

Runner of the Week

Emily Timmer earned NWC Women's Runner of the Week honors after winning the University of Washington's Sundodger Open on Saturday. She finished the 6k course in a time of 21:30 to become the first Logger to win the race since Dana Boyle did it in 2001, the same year she won the NCAA Division III Cross-Country Championship.

Nationally Ranked

The Logger women's cross-country team has been acknowledged on a national stage as Puget Sound is listed as the 20th-ranked Division III program in this weekes USTFCCCA National Rankings.

The Coach

Mike Orechia leads the Logger cross country program for the 11th season. A 1978 graduate of Springfield College, Orechia also holds a Masters from San Francisco State and has made coaching stops at San Francisco State, Danvers High School and University of Chicago.
