WRAPPING UP SEPTEMBER
Four games into the Northwest Conference schedule, the Loggers are looking as stong as ever as they head into this week's games with Whitman and Whitworth with an 8-0 overall record, including 4-0 in the NWC.
The Loggers vs. Pacific Lutheran
In what head coach Randy Hanson called "a good team win," the nationally-ranked Puget Sound Loggers shutout cross-town rival and host Pacific Lutheran, 3-0, in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Wednesday afternoon on the PLU soccer field in Parkland, Wash. The Loggers headed into the contest ranked fourth nationally in the adidas/NSCAA National Rankings and fifth in the D3Kicks.com Top 25.
It was freshman Kelly Anderson (Centennial, Colo./Littleton) who got the Loggers (7-0-0, 3-0-0 NWC) on the board when she scored her first collegiate goal following a cross from sophomore Melissa Abellanida (Pukalani, Hawaii/King Kekaulike) in the 28th minute. Just a few minutes before halftime, the Loggers struck again as Anderson found Fiona Gornick (Portland, Ore./Grant) for the Loggers second goal of the afternoon and a 2-0 halftime lead.
Janece Levien (Beaverton, Ore.) scored her NWC-leading ninth goal of the year in the 79th minute following a feed from Gornick on the left side of the goal. The Loggers outshot the Lutes, 20-2, during the match and the Logger keepers had an easy afternoon, not having to record any official saves.
The Loggers vs. Willamette
Scoring three goals and assisting on another, senior Adrienne Folsom (Lakewood, Wash./Charles Wright) took charge of the nationally-ranked Puget Sound Loggers as they picked up an easy win against the Linfield Wildcats, 5-0, in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Sunday afternoon in McMinnville, Ore.
The Loggers (8-0-0, 4-0-0 NWC), who are ranked fourth in the NSCAA/adidas National Rankings and fifth in the D3kicks.com Top 25, didn't waste much time getting on the scoreboard. Senior Katie Gillette (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley) and junior Fiona Gornick (Portland, Ore./Grant) teamed up to feed Kelly Anderson (Centennial, Colo./Littleton) in the sixth minute as the Loggers took a 1-0 lead. Just a few minutes later, Folsom picked up her first goal of the afternoon to give UPS a 2-0 lead just 9:27 into the game.
A few minutes after that, Folsom fed Gornick and Gornick was able to power the ball over the head of Linfield keeper Kelsey Hasselblad as Puget Sound pushed their lead to 3-0. Folsom struck again in the 31st minute, this time getting under a pass from Gillette and heading the ball into the net. The Loggers final goal came at the 87 minute mark when Folsom scored unassisted to give Puget Sound the 5-0 win over the host Wildcats.
The Logger offense controlled the contest, outshooting the Wildcats 19-4. The UPS defense also played strong, allowing Linfield to just one shot on net which was saved by reserve keeper Katie Wheeler (Oregon City, Ore.). Kallie Wolfer (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) made the start for the Loggers in net but wasn't forced to make a save in 45 minutes played.
National Attention
The Loggers held steady in the D3kicks.com Top 25, holding down the number five spot for the second straight week. Due to a clerical issue, the Loggers were not in this week's NSCAA/adidas National Rankings but are expected to be back on the list next week.
