#12 LOGGERS TRANQUILLIZE BEARCATS, 5-0

TACOMA, Wash. - Led by three second-half goals from freshman Kyle Benson (Lynnwood, Wash./Kamiak), the 12th-ranked Puget Sound Loggers blanked the Willamette Bearcats, 5-0, in a Northwest Conference men's soccer game on Sunday afternoon in Tacoma.

The Loggers (6-0-0, 1-0-0 NWC) outshout the Bearcats (2-3-1, 0-2-0 NWC) 19-4 in the first half but neither team was able to put a ball into the net as the two squads took a scoreless draw into halftime.  Willamette keeper Scott Klein made seven saves in the first half to keep the Loggers from scoring while Pete Van Sant (Santa Cruz, Calif.) had to make just one to hold the clean sheet through 45 minutes.

In the second half, the Logger scoring barrage began in the 51st minute when Mark Conrad (Seattle, Wash./Willamette) took a pass from Scott Blanchet (Gig Harbor, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) and beat Klein from about 10 yards out.  Less than three minutes later, the Loggers were awarded a penalty kick and senior captain Greg Swanson (University Place, Wash./Curtis) came through for UPS, nailing the shot to give Puget Sound the 2-0 lead.

Benson scored his first goal of the season in the 59th minute, taking the feed from Conrad for a one-timer into the back of the net.  Benson got his second goal in the 68th minute following a pass from Zach Semago (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) and then recorded the hat trick in the 72nd minute, heading a ball fed from Daniel Lee (Seattle, Wash./Blanchet) on the right side.

Van Sant made two saves to collect the shutout for the Loggers.  Klein finished with 10 saves but allowed the five goals.

The Loggers will hit the road on Saturday to take on Linfield in McMinnville, Ore.
