LOGGERS USE EARLY GOAL TO CRUISE PAST CAL LU, 4-1
TACOMA, Wash. - It didn't take very long for the 11th-ranked Puget Sound Loggers to pull ahead of the Cal Lutheran Regals as the Loggers used a penalty kick in the fifth minute to take a 1-0 lead and they never trailed as they earned a 4-1 win in a non-conference women's soccer game on Friday afternoon on East Athletic Field in Tacoma, Wash.
Fiona Gornick ( Portland, Ore./Grant) took advantage of the PK opportunity just 4:38 into the game following a hard foul and a yellow card issued to CLU's Sarah Rickert. The Loggers added a second goal in the 21st minute when Adrienne Folsom (Lakewood, Wash./Charles Wright Academy) dribbled up the right side and beat the keeper from about five yards out. Puget Sound made it 3-0 in the 40th minute when Folsom fed a ball in to Katie Gillette (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley), who finished in front of the net.
In the second half, Janece Levien (Beaverton, Ore.) got her Northwest Conference-leading sixth goal of the season when she took a ball from a CLU defender and fired it into the net. The Regals earned their only goal in the 76th minute when Jordan Kirkman found Marisa Zambetti on the free kick and Zambetti put the ball past Logger keeper Katie Wheeler (Oregon City, Ore.)
Kallie Wolfer (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) made six saves in the first half and was the keeper of record.
The Loggers will be back in action on Sunday morning when they host Augsburg, beginning at 10 a.m. on East Athletic Field in Tacoma, Wash.
