LOGGERS OUT OF HEAT BUT STILL HOT

The Loggers opened up the 2007 campaign in fine fashion last weekend, posting identical 3-0 wins over La Verne and Occidental on the road to head into this weekend's home opener with a 2-0 record. The Loggers will take on Claremont-M-S on Friday evening before taking on Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday. Also joining in the fun with by Linfield, who will head up to take on the Stags and Sagehens as well.

The Loggers vs. La Verne

The Puget Sound Logger men's soccer team began the year ranked 20th in the country according to the voters at D3Kicks.com. On Saturday night, the Loggers proved they deserve the national attention, blanking the La Verne Leopards, 3-0, in a non-conference match in La Verne, Calif.

The Loggers earned goals from Alex Lehecka (Burlington, Wash./Burlington-Edison), Derek Woodworth (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) and Cole Peterson (Great Falls, Mont./C.M. Russell) to collect the win.

Keeper Pete Van Sant (Santa Cruz, Calif.) made three saves to collect the shutout.

The Loggers vs. Occidental

Playing in 105 degree weather, the Puget Sound Loggers outshot, outscored and outlasted the Occidental Tigers, 3-0, in a non-conference men's soccer game on Monday afternoon at Occidental College in Los Angeles, Calif.

The Loggers (2-0) got on the board for the first time in the 29th minute, thanks to junior Taylor Hyde (Sandy, Utah/Waterford). Hyde scored again following the break, this time in the 51st minute to give the Loggers a 2-0 lead over the Tigers. Just a few minutes later, Scott Blanchet (Gig Harbor, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) put a ball in the back of the net to give the Loggers the three-goal advantage and the eventual 3-0 win.

Senior All-American Pete Van Sant (Santa Cruz, Calif.) was solid in net, making five saves to collect his second shutout in as many games.

National Attention

The Loggers moved up one spot in the D3kicks.com Top 25, earning 166 points to take over the 19th spot. In the adidas/NSCAA national rankings, the Loggers were just outside the top 25 after holding down the fourth spot in the regional rankings.

Scouting Claremont-M-S

The Stags will be making their season debut on Friday evening in Tacoma. In 2006, Claremont-M-S took fourth place in the SCIAC with a 8-9-1 overall record and a 7-6-1 SCIAC record.

Scouting Pomona-Pitzer

Pomona-Pitzer, who takes on Chapman on Wednesday, opened the season over the weekend with a 2-0 loss at home against Cal State San Marcos. Last year, the Sagehens took third in the SCIAC, posting a 10-5-4 overall record and a record of 8-3-3 in the SCIAC.

The Coach

In his 14th season at the helm of the Loggers, Reece Olney has compiled a career record through the weekend of 161-74-24. In Northwest Conference matches, Olney has a record of 92-28-12.
