MEN'S SOCCER PICKED TO REPEAT
SPOKANE, Wash. - After winning the Northwest Conference title with a 13-3-2 overall record and 10-2-2 record against NWC teams, the Puget Sound Logger men's soccer squad has been picked by the NWC coaches to repeat as NWC champions in 2007. On top of garnering attention in the conference, the Loggers are also making noise on the national stage, earning a preseason ranking of 20th in the country, according to d3kicks.com.
The Loggers will look to All-American keeper and 2006 NWC Defensive Player of the Year Pete Van Sant (Santa Cruz, Calif.) to anchor a defense that allowed just 0.38 goals per match last season. The Loggers also return All-NWC defender Cole Peterson (Great Falls, Mont./C.M. Russell) and all-conference midfielder Scott Blanchett (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine Prep).
The Loggers won't have to go far to find their biggest competition for the title as the coaches picked Pacific Lutheran second with three first-place votes and 55 total points. Whitworth was picked third, followed by Linfield, Pacific, Whitman, George Fox and Willamette.
The 2007 season kicks off for the Loggers with a night game on Sept. 1 at University of La Verne in La Verne, Calif.
