Holidays & Bonus DaysSchedulingThe university observes 13 paid holidays and/or bonus days annually. Holidays recognized by the university are generally dates observed by the larger community like New Year's Day, Independence Day, and Thanksgiving. Bonus days identified by the university are dates not generally observed by the larger community like the day after Thanksgiving. Holidays and bonus days are designated by the university and usually announced before the beginning of each fiscal year. Holiday or Bonus Day PayAll full-time staff members in regular positions who work or are on paid leave for all scheduled hours during the month will receive eight hours of holiday or bonus day pay at the regular rate, exclusive of overtime, for each holiday or bonus day observed. If a designated holiday or bonus day falls on a day not normally scheduled as a workday for a full-time staff member, the staff member will receive eight hours pay for that day. An alternate schedule may be authorized by the supervisor. All part-time staff members in regular positions will receive holiday or bonus day pay on a prorated basis at the regular rate, exclusive of overtime, for each holiday or bonus day observed. The number of hours of holiday or bonus day pay such a staff member is eligible for will be calculated each pay period in which a holiday or bonus day is observed. Full-time staff members on leave without pay will receive no holiday pay. Temporary staff members who work 40 hours per week during all regularly-scheduled hours for the pay period (i.e., from the 16th of the month to the 15th of the following month), are eligible for holiday or bonus day pay. To be eligible for holiday or bonus day pay, a staff member must be working or on paid leave that has been approved by the supervisor (e.g., vacation leave) on the last scheduled workday prior to and the first scheduled workday following the holiday or bonus day. Any staff member who is scheduled to work on a holiday or a bonus day and who does not report for work will not receive holiday or bonus day pay described above unless the absence is authorized by the staff member's supervisor. Work Performed on a Holiday or Bonus DayStaff members in non-exempt positions required to work on holidays or bonus days: - will be paid for time worked at one and one-half times their regular rate of pay; or
- will be granted compensatory time off with pay during the pay period at one and one-half times the number of hours worked on the holiday or bonus day; or
- will be granted vacation leave credits at one and one-half times the number of hours worked on the holiday or bonus day, at the discretion of the supervisor or department head.
Hours worked on a holiday will not be counted toward the calculation of overtime hours. Additional pay, time off or vacation leave will be granted for time worked on an actual holiday (e.g., Sunday, July 4) or a recognized holiday (e.g., Monday, July 5). However, if the staff member works both on the actual and the recognized holiday, then the staff member will receive additional pay, time off, or vacation leave for time worked on the actual holiday only. This pay, time off or vacation leave is in addition to the holiday or bonus day pay described earlier. Staff members in exempt positions required to work on holidays (whether actual or recognized) or bonus days will, at the supervisor's or department head's discretion, be granted another day off during the month or will be granted a day of vacation to be taken at a later time. Religious Holy DaysThe diversity of people who make up the university community requires sensitivity to the celebration of religious holy days. Unless operating needs of departments cannot be met, supervisors should make reasonable accommodations in arranging work schedules for individuals who want time off for significant events of their faith. A list of major religious holy days is available from the Diversity and Community office or from Human Resources. If a staff member wishes to be off for a religious holy day, the staff member may ask to use accrued vacation time. The supervisor may also permit the staff member to take time off without pay or to rearrange the work schedule during the week in which the holy day occurs to make up for missed work time.
