More details >> - Waste Reduction Task Force Update
The Campus-Community Waste Reduction Task Force has been working hard to figure out ways to reduce waste on campus, in neighborhood businesses, and in the community. After studying what the campus and community throw away, the Task Force identified several focus areas for waste reduction--on-campus paper use, plastic shopping bags, and food waste among them. Students in Dr. Karin Sable's and Dr. Nila Wiese's fall 2006 classes developed pilot projects to test community-based social marketing techniques to convince students, faculty, staff, local businesses, and neighbors to reduce waste. If the Task Force receives additional grant funding, it will implement these projects in 2007. - Recycling on campus on the rise
Since the beginning of the year, recycling has increased 40%! At the start of term, we were using 80 of the 90-gallon blue recycling toters that you see in the residential areas of campus. As of the end of September, we've increased that to 114 toters to deal with the increased recycling efforts! In addition, during sustainable move in efforts, we recycled approximately 270 cubic yards of cardboard--we had to have our three cardboard recycling bins emptied three times! Since move in, we've collectively recycled 23,140 pounds of waste that would normally have gone into the landfill. Good job, Loggers! - Impressive Zero Waste Events
At this year's Log Jam, UPS fed approximately 2000 people, but yielded only 12 pounds and 5 ounces of non-recyclable or compostable trash. That's one-tenth of one ounce per person, or the equivalent of one empty ketchup packet per person! The freshman picnic had similar zero waste success. Keep up these efforts by using the china and silverware in the Diner--and bringing it back in a timely fashion! - Sustainability Advisory Committee Annual Report 2005-06 (DOC)
