Becoming a Peer Tutor

Academic Peer Tutors work directly with fellow students in one-to-one or small-group collaborative settings in the Center for Writing, Learning, and Teaching. Students applying for these positions must have expertise in the subject area and excellent interpersonal skills.

Qualifications

Applicants should meet the following requirements in order to be considered:
  • Enrollment as a student at the University of Puget Sound for the academic year 2007-08
  • Extensive knowledge of the course content in the classes to be tutored
  • Transcript grades of A's or high B's in the subject area
  • Recommendation of faculty member(s) in the content area
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Flexibility in working with students of all levels of ability, gender, age, and cultural diversity
  • Dependable, organized work habits
  • Ability to participate in mandatory orientation and training sessions, as well as scheduled tutor meetings throughout the academic school year

Responsibilities

  • Tutor students in content material and appropriate learning strategies
  • Collaborate with other members of the tutor team to ensure successful operation of the tutoring program
  • Attend mandatory tutor meetings and training sessions

Terms of Employment

  • 4-6 tutoring hours per week
  • Additional paid training hours
  • Both work-study and non work-study candidates will be considered

Interviews

Not all applicants will be interviewed. Interviews for positions will conclude before the end of April 2008.
