Proficiency TestsThe instruments used to measure proficiency in French, German, and Spanish are the Minnesota Language Proficiency Assessments (MLPA). These assessment instruments have been developed and extensively field tested by the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition at the University of Minnesota. Testing in Japanese, Greek, and Latin is conducted using in-house written tests, followed by oral interviews, when necessary. The test for Chinese is computer based and multiple choice. The proficiency exams measure a basic first-year of college knowledge of a language. They do not confer credit. Students will be informed of their test results via e-mail, as will their advisor and the Registrar's Office. One retake of all language assessments is permitted.
