University of Puget Sound is Newest Evergreen Options Customer
November 21, 2006
Tacoma - The University of Puget Sound is Tacoma Power’s newest green power customer. The university will purchase the equivalent of 25,000 kilowatt-hours of green power through the utility’s
EverGreen Options program. The commitment, which will cost the university $300 a month, will support development of more green power generating facilities in the Northwest.
The investment, which represents half of the building’s anticipated electricity use, is part of the university’s effort to make its new science center, Harned Hall, environmentally friendly. Harned Hall opened in September 2006.
“EverGreen Options is a great opportunity for educational institutions and other businesses and organizations that want to demonstrate their support for new electricity resources such as wind power,” said Tacoma Power Superintendent William Gaines. “For a modest investment, these organizations can show their constituents and customers that they are serious about their commitment to the environment.”
“The University of Puget Sound community is excited about this opportunity to use green power,” said Craig Benjamin, the university’s associate vice president for facilities services. “While it is our first time to do so, we do not expect it to be our last. Sustainability initiatives by campus organizations as well as our commitment to design buildings to meet LEED silver standards will certainly result in additional purchases.”
