Loggers Dominate Weekly Awards
November 3, 2006
TACOMA, Wash. - Sweeping the soccer honors and adding a football player of the week and a coach of the year, the Northwest Conference dished out a handful of honors to the Puget Sound Loggers on Tuesday morning.
Senior Steve Martin (Spokane, Wash./Lewis & Clark) earned NWC Defensive Player of the Week honors after recording 16 tackles, 12 of them solo, in a 28-25 win at Colorado College. This week, the Loggers will return home to take on the Menlo Oaks in the Logger home finale.
On the soccer field, the Loggers took all four honors following a weekend of shutouts. On the women's side, junior Adrienne Folsom (Lakewood, Wash./Charles Wright Academy) scored four goals and added two assists in a pair of Logger victories to take NWC Offensive Player of the Week honors. Senior Katy Daly (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic) earned NWC Defensive Player of the Week honors after leading a Logger defense that allowed no goals on the weekend.
On the men's side, Scott Blanchet (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) earned NWC Offensive Player of the Week honors, scoring a gaol in each of the Loggers wins to put Puget Sound on the brink of the NWC title. Senior Pete Van Sant earned NWC Defensive Player of the Week honors for the third time this season, making 12 saves on the weekend in a pair of shutout victories.
It was also announced on Tuesday that Mike Orechia has been named Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year by his NWC peers.
