Puget Sound Professors to Present Research at Geology Society of America Annual Conference

Tacoma, Wash. – Puget Sound Professors Jeffrey Tepper and Michael Valentine will present their research during the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America (GSA) being held Oct. 22 to 25 in Philadelphia. More than 6,200 geophysicists are scheduled to attend the conference.

Recent natural disasters highlight a need to improve public awareness of the causes of geohazards and the ways communities prepare for these events. Professors Tepper and Valentine developed a popular course that addresses these issues. The highlight of the course is a semester-long project in which student teams are assigned a parcel of real estate to develop. All parcels, chosen in consultation with county emergency management planners, are in areas identified as being at risk for one or more natural hazard.

During their presentation, Geohazards – Teachable Moments for Students and the Public: An Illustrated Community Discussion, the professors will review the inspiration for their course, and review the course model. Attendees will also learn ways to adapt the course for other regions.

More information on the GSA conference, including a complete schedule, is available at www.geosociety.org or by calling 303.357.1000.
