October 23, 2006
TACOMA, Wash. - Setting a new record for points scored in a game, the Puget Sound Loggers won big over the Lewis & Clark Pioneers, 70-14, in a Northwest Conference football game on Saturday afternoon on Peyton Field at Baker Stadium in Tacoma, Wash. Senior Rory Lee (Seabeck, Wash./Klahowya) had four total touchdowns in the win.
The Loggers scored their first of three first quarter touchdowns on a one-yard run by Lee with 5:03 remaining in the quarter that capped a five-play, 44-yard drive. Following the kickoff, Puget Sound defensive tackle Russ Stanbery (Steilacoom, Wash./Lakes) returned an interception 24 yards to give the Loggers a 14-0 lead following the PAT from Justin Dougherty (Ridgefield, Wash.). With just 40 seconds remaining in the opening quarter, Lee ran the ball 33 yards down the left side of the field for his second touchdown of the afternoon.
The Logger assault continued in the second quarter as Lee ran the ball for a score yet again, this time a five yard rush to give UPS a 28-0 lead. On their next drive, Kavin Williams (Ocean Shores, Wash./North Beach) found Lee for a 52-yard touchdown reception that gave the Loggers a 35-0 lead. It was Williams again on the next go-around, this time connecting with Darrell Stewart (Long Beach, Calif./Loyola). The Pioneers got on the board right before half, with Mike Anchustegui catching a six-yard pass from AJ Brown for the score and the teams went into halftime with the Loggers leading, 42-7.
It didn't take long for the Loggers to get going in the second half as Isaac Blum (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines) ran the opening kickoff back 90 yards to give Puget Sound a 49-7 lead. James Olcott (La Center, Wash.) made it 56-7 at the 9:09 mark in the third quarter, running the ball in 14 yards to cap an eight play, 78-yard drive. Following a 35-yard touchdown pass from Brown to Mike Wennerlind that closed the gap to 56-14, the Loggers got an 11-yard score from AJ Johnson (Olympia, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) and the extra point by Dougherty gave Puget Sound 63 points, one point more than their previous school record of 62, set in 1973 vs. US International.
A nine-yard run by Morgan Anthony (Mercer Island, Wash.) with 10:43 remaining in the fourth quarter gave the Loggers their 10th and final touchdown of the afternoon, capping a 70-14 win. Coach Phil Willenbrock used much of the second half to give playing opportunities to reserve players.
The Loggers were led offensively by 186 yards in the air by Williams and 160 yards on the ground by Lee. Stewart added four receptions, totaling 102 yards and a score in the win. Defensively, Brian Jones (Morgan Hill, Calif./Live Oak) led the way with 4.5 tackles while Stanbery and Mitch Grandstaff (Parker, Colo.) each added an interception.
