Incandescent Melodies Recital Spotlights Saxophone

TACOMA, Wash. – University of Puget Sound will host a faculty recital featuring pieces that combine the saxophone with other instruments in a program of expressive and emotionally charged music. The concert will be held in Schneebeck Concert Hall on Saturday, Oct. 21, at 7:30 p.m.

“What ties this program together are the ardent emotions involved with the pieces,” says university affiliate artist and saxophonist Fred Winkler.

The program will begin with selections from Song Book by David Maslanka for saxophone and marimba, showcasing Maslanka’s melodic style and the synergy of tone between the saxophone and marimba.

William Albright’s Sonata will follow. It is considered “one of the new staples of modern saxophone literature,” says Winkler. Composed for saxophone and piano, the four movements of the piece take listeners on a cathartic journey, from a nervous dialog between the instruments to a mournful elegy, before building up again in a mad dance to the end.

Third in the program is Facades, by Philip Glass, composed for two soprano saxophones and a string quartet. The piece will be performed by university music faculty Maria Sampen, Timothy Christie, and Miriam Shames, joined by students Zo Manfredi ’07 and Daniel Goodrich ’09.

The recital ends with Steven Galante’s Shu Gath Manna for alto saxophone and Yamaha-DX7 Synthesizer. The combination of saxophone and synthesizer adds another dimension to the concert. “Perhaps one can envision this as a conversation with one’s computer,” says Winkler.

Winkler is joined for the recital by university music faculty Amy Putnam, percussion and synthesizer, and Duane Hulbert, piano.
